Growing steadily through organic growth and acquisitions, a US truck manufacturer ran a mix of 40-year-old COBOL-based earlier systems, new SAP solutions, and a tangle of integrations. As financial and operations data was collected, corrected and collated, critical details were lost, offering no ability to look back to discover root causes. With complexity rising, it was almost impossible to understand the true costs of manufacturing, causing the gap between forecasts and actuals to widen.

IBM Services helped the manufacturer implement a powerful SAP S/4HANA solution running on IBM Power Systems™, ultimately replacing all the older systems. The solution delivers real-time insight into the actual cost of production, empowering the company to act fast to defend its profit margins. Users enjoy more standardized, intuitive access to reports from their desktop PCs and mobile devices, driven by the SAP Fiori 2.0 interface.


Step One

As the company began to move its SAP environment from IBM POWER7® servers to the IBM POWER8® platform, IBM Services consultants saw an opportunity. IBM experts demonstrated the unique capabilities and business value of SAP HANA running on IBM Power Systems™. The IBM proof of concept  showed how the customer could identify production order variances in 50,000 items each month in near real-time to help rebuild missing margins.

Step Two

The client also wanted to replace COBOL apps using existing SAP solutions. Building on the client's experience with SAP HANA, IBM Services experts helped the company start its digital transformation with SAP S/4HANA and move to real-time information systems. The new apps were based on SAP S/4HANA 1610 with embedded analytics, SAP General Ledger and SAP Asset Lifecycle Accounting along with IMPACT for automotive, an IBM  preconfigured SAP S/4HANA solution.

Step Three

All S/4HANA applications are accessed exclusively through the SAP Fiori 2.0 user experience, providing a standard simplified, intuitive interface on desktop and mobile devices. IBM Services consultants built 15 standard finance reports capable of delivering specific actionable financial insights. The general ledger project was completed in seven months and the manufacturer is already planning to deploy SAP S/4HANA across its entire supply chain.
