Business challenge story
Rolling with the punches
The banking industry is a turbulent place right now, with new customer expectations, competitors, macro-economic developments and regulations all making their mark on established players. Against this unpredictable backdrop, Swedbank has found success by focusing on what’s most important to its customers.
Girish Wani, Agile Product Owner, Mainframe Development Team, Swedbank, explains: “This is a time of great upheaval in the banking sector. New competitors are entering the industry, digital technology is changing how people engage with their banks and regulatory bodies are releasing new directives all the time. At Swedbank, we want to lead by example by adapting faster than our competitors to change.”
To enable the speed and agility required to achieve this goal, Swedbank recognized the need for a complete transformation of its approach to application development. With its most experienced developers approaching retirement age, the clock was ticking to ensure a smooth handover to the next generation entering the business.
“At the core of the Swedbank business is our IBM Z® platform,” comments Wani. “Our developers have a huge amount of knowledge about the environment, but we were spending too much time analyzing our application landscape and trying to work out interdependencies. We wanted to move towards a more agile DevOps delivery model to ensure that we weren’t stifling innovation, but first, we needed greater insight into our environment.”
Enabling unprecedented visibility
Swedbank shed new light on its application landscape with IBM Application Discovery and Delivery Intelligence, an analytical platform that rapidly uncovers interdependencies and the impacts of change.
“We chose IBM Application Discovery and Delivery Intelligence over the alternatives because it provides deep, visual analysis that’s really user-intuitive,” says Wani. “It also integrates seamlessly into our existing environment and allows us to call on IBM support when needed.”
Prior to the selection process, Swedbank participated in workshops with IBM, identifying obstacles it might face in its efforts to achieve fast and effective application development. Using IBM Design Thinking principles and storyboarding techniques, the IBM team helped Swedbank realize that the first step towards change would be deploying IBM Application Discovery and Delivery Intelligence to analyze its software environment and guide its application modernization efforts. Next, Swedbank commissioned a proof of concept (PoC) exercise to see the technology in action.
Tadas Janionis, Senior Software Engineer at Swedbank, recalls: “The IBM workshops gave us an objective perspective on the development processes that we needed. Together, we pinpointed the biggest obstacles preventing us from streamlining application development. The PoC enabled us to apply IBM Application Discovery and Delivery Intelligence to resolve these priority issues, letting us achieve immediate value and see the impact that the platform could have on our operations.”
Swedbank rolled out IBM Application Discovery and Delivery to its mainframe community, offering education sessions to help them better understand the platform. Today, training on how to use the toolset is part of the bank’s plan for new developers.
Moving towards agile
Using IBM Application Discovery and Delivery Intelligence, Swedbank’s developers have the insight they need to make better-informed decisions. By avoiding pitfalls and identifying complexities upfront, the bank’s development team can undertake fewer, shorter development cycles, helping to bring new high-quality services and features to market sooner.
“As our developers get more familiar with IBM Application Discovery and Delivery Intelligence, they can use it to anticipate issues and predict how any changes they make will affect the rest of our application landscape,” comments Wani. “They will be more likely to get it right first time, dramatically reducing lead times for new releases and driving up development quality. As a result, we can satisfy our customers even more and widen the gap between us and our competitors.”
Swedbank is laying the foundation for its transition towards an agile DevOps delivery model, which will enable the bank to find new efficiencies while strengthening its customer proposition.
Wani concludes: “With help from IBM, we’re giving our developers the tools to work more productively than ever. Next on the agenda, we’re planning to deploy IBM Developer for z/OS, which we anticipate will bring us even closer to our vision of truly agile DevOps operations. We’re very happy with the way that our relationship with IBM has evolved, and how it’s playing a role in preparing Swedbank for an unknown but exciting future.”
With a history dating back to 1820, Swedbank is the one of the largest financial institutions in the Nordic and Baltic region. It provides a range of banking services to approximately 7.3 million private customers and around 618,000 corporate customers across Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and beyond, retaining a focus on social, economic and environmental sustainability.
