How to find, attract, recruit and onboard the best people

Premium and luxury auto-maker Jaguar Land Rover is growing fast. To fuel the growth, Jaguar Land Rover needs excellent people at every level.

Jaguar Land Rover employs 40,000 people globally. Human Resource (HR) management remains a priority, with a constant requirement to attract, recruit, onboard and develop the best talent efficiently and effectively.

Growth brought considerable pressure to the department, and Jaguar Land Rover realized that the HR function needed to support the business in a more integrated, proactive way. The HR team wanted to provide more organizational design, effectiveness and development, and streamline the department to remove the heavy administration load.

Standardize, simplify, streamline

Jaguar Land Rover selected IBM Services to provide strategic advice combined with hands-on implementation services. The project scope ranged from the design of the shared services themselves, through the redesign of operational processes, to the software configuration and deployment choices, representing a complete reinvention of the way the company delivers HR services. The decision to engage IBM stemmed largely from the IBM team’s recent experience of a similar transformation program.

To help simplify and streamline HR, the team included an ambition to standardize as many processes and systems as possible, to create a scalable platform that would serve the globally expanding company.

It was critical that the IT track worked in parallel with the HR transformation. Jaguar Land Rover had agreed some years ago to standardize on SAP solutions for business management, and the company started looking at how potential HR solutions, including but not exclusively SAP SuccessFactors solutions, would fit into that strategic picture.

Additionally, Jaguar Land Rover was keen to pursue cloud-based options because it would avoid the capital expense of purchasing new on-premise systems. In addition, cloud offered a way to reduce the cost and complexity of owning and operating systems by enabling Jaguar Land Rover to hand off maintenance and administration to the cloud provider.

IBM combined with the Jaguar Land Rover team to provide strategic implementation advice around the shared service model. This included the organization design, process reinvention, ways for employees to interact, and software deployment. IBM reviewed the existing HR processes and worked with Jaguar Land Rover Subject Matter Experts to look at the advantages the shared service model could offer.

Jaguar Land Rover selected the SAP SuccessFactors Talent Management Suite as the enabling technology for its HR transformation. As an all-cloud solution, this suite met the company’s objective to remove IT dependencies, with the associated benefits of scalability.

IBM helped Jaguar Land Rover establish the new HR shared services center underpinned by SAP Hybris® Cloud for Service and SAP HANA® Cloud Portal, which were deployed to support the HR Service Centre and for employee self-service. IBM also configured and rolled out SAP SuccessFactors.
 

Results story

Successful HR transformation brings rewards and awards

Over a program lasting two years, Jaguar Land Rover has replaced the former HR processes with a central shared service known as HR Direct. Employees are considered to be customers, with service level agreements in place to ensure prompt and efficient responses from the HR team.

By consolidating to the shared service model, Jaguar Land Rover has brought its HR data into a single location where, over time, it can be monitored and managed. After working with IBM and SAP to replace paper-based processes with integrated digital processes, the company now feels able to build upon this foundation, which is essential to sustainable management of the rise in headcount.

With centralized talent management data, Jaguar Land Rover can manage the entire employee lifecycle more efficiently, from recruiting to development. With SAP SuccessFactors software, new hires can be productive from day one, as the right people join in the right roles, faster.

Even as the company grows, the reduced paperwork and the ambition to keep employee self-service on the rise will contribute to enhanced productivity over time.

For its successful HR transformation, Jaguar Land Rover received the SuccessFactors HR Excellence President’s Award, as well as a SAP Quality Award for HR innovation.

As more employees enroll on the system, economies of scale will increase. As the talent management database grows, HR will be able to use SAP SuccessFactors Workforce Analytics, helping HR identify gaps and recruit needed resources.
