Top AI Code Editors

AI-powered code editors have evolved from simple rules-based autocomplete tools into intelligent software engineering platforms that actively play a role in creating and managing code. While approaches differ, most leading tools bring together three core components:

  • The workspace: A visual editing interface that replaces or builds on top of an integrated development environment (IDE)

  • The reasoning layer: A coding assistant powered by one or more large language models (LLMs) that understands natural language, answers questions about the codebase, generates code and recommends improvements

  • The execution layer: One or more AI agents directed by the coding assistant to perform autonomous, multi-step tasks on the developer’s behalf

Common features cover every aspect of software development: Planning, code generation, code review, test generation, debugging, deployment and governance.

The editors in this list are sometimes referred to as code assistants, coding agents, AI-first coding platforms, or coding partners. Readers should understand that delineations between these categories are increasingly blurry and even meaningless in some cases. The AI coding market is converging, with most major products adding similar core capabilities. As a result, it’s difficult to say, for instance, whether a specific editor is an assistant or an agent. Most of the products featured here lie on a spectrum. The meaningful differences lie in what they optimize for. For example, some are better for individual coders working on an isolated passion project. Others are more capable of handling robust enterprise-grade workflows.

The following editors are grouped into two broad categories: Code editors and AI agents/assistants that work on top of an existing IDE. Some tools prioritize governance and security in an enterprise context, while others focus on rapid prototyping or cloud-native development. The right choice for a given project depends on a number of factors, such as the developers’ workflow, preferred programming languages, existing toolchain, deployment requirements and the desired level of autonomy vs. control.

AI code editors

These are editors or IDEs built with AI as a core part of the experience. AI is integrated throughout the development workflow and not as an afterthought. These platforms are suitable for use as a developer’s primary coding environment. Other tools may live on top of an IDE—these ones bring their own environment to the table.

Visual Studio Code (with extensions)

Visual Studio Code, or VS code, is the veteran of the list, and it remains one of the most widely used code editors despite its age. Microsoft’s continued investment in AI has transformed it into a capable AI-assisted development environment (with the right extensions). This is especially helpful for seasoned developers who already know the platform intimately.

VS Code offers granular control and security. Native VS Code allows one to use local LLMs or route traffic through secure enterprise proxies.

Cursor

Cursor is a VS Code fork, which means it uses the same core open-source codebase. It retains the same features, layouts and keyboard shortcuts—again, a benefit to those used to VS Code’s interface. But the key differentiator that Cursor brings is that AI is integrated natively. Cursor is designed for AI-driven coding, but in an established environment that developers already know well. Developers might choose Cursor because it doesn’t rely on AI extensions—the AI is baked in.

IBM Bob

IBM Bob is positioned as a superior choice for enterprise use cases. Also built on a customized version of VS Code, Bob combines conversational AI with enterprise-aware development workflows. Developers can write, understand, modernize and maintain software while integrating with IBM’s broader developer ecosystem and governance capabilities.

It focuses on enterprise software engineering rather than individual productivity. Bob helps development teams accelerate delivery of big, complex projects while maintaining the governance, transparency and security that enterprise-grade development often requires.

Zed

Zed emphasizes speed, responsiveness and collaboration. This might appeal to fans of lightweight editors like Neovim. Unlike JavaScript or TypeScript-based Electron editors, Zed offers native performance while incorporating AI-assisted development into a lightweight, open-source editing experience. Zed also uses a custom, GPU-accelerated UI framework instead of Electron-based alternatives.

Replit

Replit is a cloud-native development environment that combines an online IDE, managed runtime and AI tools. Unlike desktop code editors, Replit enables users to not just write, but run, test and deploy applications entirely from the browser.

Replit also has powerful agentic features. Replit Agent can scaffold entire applications, implement features across files, write SQL queries, diagnose bugs and iteratively refine projects based on natural language instructions.

Because it all works within Replit’s managed cloud environment, developers don’t have to concern themselves with local infrastructure. This speed and simplicity make it attractive for rapid prototyping, education and startups.

AI coding assistants and agents

These products extend the functionality of an existing IDE rather than replacing it entirely. They offer powerful conversational assistance, code generation and explanation, enterprise integrations and governance.

GitHub Copilot

GitHub Copilot is a widely deployed AI coding tool inside large organizations. JetBrains AI Assistant

JetBrains AI Assistant enhances the IntelliJ family of IDEs by combining AI with the company’s mature language intelligence. Rather than replacing static analysis and sophisticated refactoring tools, AI builds on them to provide smarter code generation, explanations and project-aware assistance.

Developers working primarily in programming languages such as Java, Kotlin, C# and Python often prefer JetBrains tools like PyCharm for its language-specific tooling.

Gemini Code Assist

Google Gemini Code Assist is Google’s enterprise AI coding assistant, built on the Gemini family of foundation models. Gemini Code Assist is a strong choice for organizations building on Google Cloud or developing Android apps. Its primary differentiator is Google’s expertise in large-context reasoning and cloud-native development, with deep integrations across Google Cloud, Firebase and Android Studio.

Amazon Q Developer

Amazon Q Developer specializes in cloud-native software development. It supports general programming tasks, but its greatest strengths are AWS architecture, infrastructure-as-code, cloud security and application modernization.

Teams heavily invested in AWS gain an AI assistant that understands cloud services, infrastructure patterns and AWS best practices better than other coding assistants.

Claude Code

Claude Code takes a different approach by operating primarily from the command line instead of replacing a traditional IDE. Claude Code excels in deeper context handling, multi-file edits and first-party integration with Anthropic’s models.

Claude Code was developed by Anthropic, so its system prompt and tool-use architecture are natively optimized for Claude’s models.

OpenAI Codex

OpenAI’s Codex has evolved from a coding assistant into a full-fledged AI software engineering platform. Its core differentiator is an emphasis on delegation: developers can assign projects to one or more autonomous agents while they do other work.

Cline

Cline is one of the most capable open-source AI coding agents. Running as a Visual Studio Code extension, it gives developers complete control over model selection while providing autonomous coding capabilities comparable to many commercial offerings.

Cline is ideal for developers who value transparency, extensibility and the ability to switch freely among AI providers without vendor lock-in.

Devin Desktop

Codeium’s Windsurf was acquired by Cognition, the same company behind the AI software engineer Devin. It now combines them into a desktop development environment to create a command center for managing agents via a Kanban view.
