IBM and SAP: Extending a partnership built on trust

IBM and SAP extend partnership with SAP Cloud Platform private edition on IBM CloudWhen I talk to enterprises about their digital business strategy, it’s clear that there can be no one-size-fits-all approach to cloud. Companies have a broad spectrum of needs and want the flexibility to run their workloads across any platform without having to rewrite everything as they go.

That’s why IBM has committed to a hybrid cloud strategy and built an infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) platform that can offer the versatility of public cloud as well as private, dedicated environments.

Extending the IBM and SAP partnership

This dedicated cloud option is highly attractive for companies looking to benefit from the agility and scale of IaaS but need the isolation of a single-tenant cloud environment. That’s why today, at its SAPPHIRE conference in Orlando, SAP is announcing plans to release SAP Cloud Platform private edition running on IBM Cloud as a dedicated cloud deployment. According to SAP, the SAP Cloud Platform provides business services, Internet of Things (IoT) services, machine learning, in-memory data management and big data services enabling customers to transform into intelligent enterprises. With the SAP Cloud Platform private edition on IBM Cloud, clients in regulated industries such as banking, healthcare and transportation, as well as those managing sensitive data, can have the flexibility, speed and agility they need to help innovate without jeopardizing security and control.

Through the IBM/SAP Digital Transformation partnership, IBM services can also help clients develop and co-innovate private cloud solutions that tap powerful technologies including blockchain, IoT and artificial intelligence to protect and monetize their data. In a separate development, in January this year, IBM became the first company to use SAP Model Company services, enhanced by IBM Industry Impact solutions, to help clients to become AI-enabled enterprises. With the introduction of SAP’s partner qualification program, IBM is proud to have achieved solution partner designation.

All of this builds on 46 years of collaboration between IBM and SAP during which time we have partnered to combine our respective capabilities and jointly deliver superior solutions for enterprise customers. In addition to SAP Cloud Platform, private edition, IBM offers one of the broadest suites of managed and unmanaged options for running SAP applications, be it on the IBM Cloud or on premises with SAP HANA on IBM Power Systems for which IBM just received the SAP Pinnacle Award for Infrastructure Partner of the Year. Regardless of where a customer is in its cloud journey, IBM offers infrastructure options across public, private and on-premises environments for running SAP applications.

Helping clients excel

An example is OSRAM, which has transformed from a traditional lamp manufacturer to a state-of-the-art lighting specialist, providing solutions for autonomous driving, facial recognition, entertainment and more. To adapt its business to meet evolving industry requirements, OSRAM turned to IBM to adopt a multicloud strategy and migrated its core SAP business applications to the IBM Cloud with support from IBM Services. Today, the company’s SAP applications are accessible to all OSRAM personnel regardless of location.

Elsewhere, Fulcrum Global Technologies, a global provider of technology solutions for the legal industry, is making use of IBM Cloud and SAP to build a suite of applications that help law firms and corporate legal departments streamline their back-office operations and maximize operational efficiency. With SAP applications on IBM Cloud, Fulcrum gets the trusted business services essential for becoming an intelligent enterprise and pure technical capabilities such as scalability, reliability and availability in addition to a security-rich environment that can position them to meet the operational and regulatory needs of their law firm clients in more than 100 countries.

Moving forward with IBM and SAP

One of the biggest issues of our time is trust in technology. For more than 100 years, IBM has built its brand on being a trustworthy partner for some of the most critical organizations in the world. I am confident that with this track record, along with SAP’s stalwart reputation in enterprise computing, the SAP Cloud Platform private edition running on the IBM Cloud will be a very compelling solution.

Lessons learned on the digital transformation journey

If one were to map the digital transformation journey, it would begin with digitization (going “paperless”), followed by digital optimization (automating business processes with workflow, business rules and software robots). Only after these steps can an organization begin true digital transformation, in which technology, processes and people work in new ways to eliminate information silos […]
