Content

  • What's new
    • General news
      • The most recent Accelerator maintenance level is 7.5.13.
      • Please find information about new functions here.
      • Incremental update using IIDR/CDC and Accelerator maintenance level 7.5.13 (Nov 20, 2024)
The IIDR/CDC-based replication component of Db2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS uses a jdbc driver-based connection to Db2 for z/OS to write processing information into CDC-owned tables in Db2 for z/OS. With Accelerator maintenance level 7.5.13, a new jdbc-driver (4.33.32) is used. This new driver requires an AES-256 encryption for the communication mentioned before. To utilize an AES-256 encryption, the z/OS component Integrated Cryptographic Service Facility (ICSF) needs to be set up accordingly. Without the customization of ICSF for AES-256, the communication with Db2 for z/OS and the writing of data to CDC will not work and cause the replication to fail.
In case this customization of ICSF for use of AES-256 encryption would absolutely not be an option, please contact IBM support for an alternate solution path.
      • End of Service (EOS) for IBM Data Server Manager for Db2 for z/OS and IBM Data Studio for Db2 for z/OS. (Oct 22, 2024)
The EOS for Data Server Manager and Data Studio have been announced back in spring 2024.
        What you need to know:
        • The Db2 Analytics Accelerator plugin for Data Studio is maintained along with Accelerator V7.5
        • IBM Data Studio and IBM Data Server Manager are not supported for use with Db2 13 for z/OS.
        • For the future administration of your Accelerator(s), make sure to plan for a timely transition towards use of Db2 Administration Foundation in combination with Db2 Administration Services.
      • Customers using maintenance level 7.5.12.1 or later: please read APAR PH63178. (Sep 10, 2024)
      • Migrating the Accelerator from IIAS to IBM Z (August 28, 2024)

You are migrating to IBM Z and want to clean up data in your IIAS appliances before decommissioning the hardware? Please open a support case for the Accelerator to get the corresponding activities coordinated. Note: to assist you remotely with the data clean-up, the appliances still need to be reachable via ssh root.

      • Temporary change of the installation procedure! - please see APAR PH55922 before upgrading. (July 26, 2023)
    • News concerning Accelerator on IBM IIAS
Admin Foundation (in combination with Admin Services) currently does not support the transfer of upgrade packages to the accelerator. The root cause for this issue is located in the UMS software component. A fix has been coded. If you need a ++APAR, please open a corresponding support case. The availability of the corresponding PTF is planned for Nov 30, 2024. For the time being, use the Analytics Accelerator Studio for the transfer of the upgrade package to the accelerator.

For a single-node installation one accelerator is represented by one SSC-LPAR, for a multi-node installation by a cluster of SSC-LPARs. Each LPAR requires IFLs, RAM, and Storage.

        Components Minimum suggested configuration
IFLs For getting-started use cases, the minimum suggested configuration is:
        • 2 IFLs, 64 GB memory and 16 GB for each CDC subscription
The recommended ratio between IFLs and memory is: 32 up to 128 GB for each IFL
      • Storage

FCP-attached or FICON-attached storage is required:

        • FCP-attached storage devices
        • FICON-attached storage devices
          • The use of HyperPAV and zHPF is mandatory.
          • The use of all-flash storage is strongly recommended.
          • A connection to a Fibre Channel SAN using a switched fabric is supported.
        • The amount of storage needed is depending on the workload. During setup the storage provided is distributed on various storage pools. For more information see the table 'Recommended pools and pool sizes' in chapter Installing Db2 Analytics Accelerator on Z of the Installation Guide.
        • Only fully-provisioned storage volumes are supported for installation of maintenance level 7.5.6(.1) or later and subsequent use of the accelerator. This applies to all kind of devices (data, boot, and runtime). For more information see APAR PH39057.

  • Network requirements
The following sections show the network requirements that must be met to successfully run IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS.
    • Network requirements for acceleration on IBM Integrated Analytics System
For the data network between IBM z Systems and the IBM Integrated Analytics System (M4001-003, M4001-006, M4001-010), a dedicated physical network is required.

      • Minimum network configuration
The minimum network configuration is for test and development scenarios, but does not satisfy high availability requirements. Hence this configuration should not be used in a production environment. The minimum network configuration requires the following components:
        Heads up
For longer 10GbE SR connections with distances around 300 meters, OM3 fiber optic cables are required. Other types support only shorter distances.

      • Call-home function
To use the Hardware Management Console (HMC) call-home function with IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator, your network must have been prepared accordingly:

        • Two cables are required between the IBM Integrated Analytics System and the HMC network switch.
        • A sufficient number of IP addresses must have been defined for the purpose. That is, each accelerator processing node requires a static IP address in the HMC network. In addition, a floating IP address must be defined, which is used for the head node.
        • The network connection between IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator and the HMC must be a switched connection (Layer-2 network), where the IP addresses of both devices are in the same subnet. A routed network connection (Layer-3 network) won't work.

In many cases, the support engineer makes the necessary provisions during the initial installation of IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator on the basis of the submitted site survey. However, if you do not yet meet the network requirements, you must open a service request.
    • Network requirements for acceleration on IBM Z
      • General Requirements

For query acceleration on IBM Z, a TCP/IP network connection is required between the affected Db2 for z/OS subsystems and IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS V7. This connection can either be defined using

        • OSA Express interfaces in IBM z14, IBM z15, or IBM z16
        or using
        • HiperSockets (if the Db2 subsystem runs in an LPAR on the same CEC).

Z/OS administrators (system programmers) who are responsible for deploying / configuring OSA or the communication with Linux on IBM Z environments, should read the IBM z/OS Communications Server and OSA-Express Best Practices white paper.
Network bandwidth and speed impact overall solution performance. For OSA interfaces we therefore recommend a dedicated OSA Express card and 10GbE (25 GbE) connectivity with Jumbo Frames.

        Note:
        • OSA-Express7S 25 GbE cards are supported using maintenance level 7.5.2.2 or later
        • When using an OSA-Express7 card make sure to have the latest Microcode Change Level (MCL) in place.

If a Firewall is in place for the network between the accelerator and the Db2 for z/OS-LPAR, at least the following ports must be accessible for the IP addresses assigned to the accelerator and z/OS LPAR:
        1400, 1401, 1500, 1600, 2222, 11301-11350, 11351-11399, 11400, 11401, 51113, plus GDPS server ports (if GDPS support is used).

VLANs (access and trunk interfaces) are supported for networks configured for the accelerator. A trunk interface can carry traffic for two or more VLANs and requires VLAN specification in the network interface on the HMC (for the "management network") or the data network, connecting to Db2 for z/OS.

For appliance installation and management, the following is required:

        • A Web browser (Firefox or Chrome) with network access to the LPAR(s).
        • One OSA Express card (1 GbE is sufficient) as network adapter for this management network.
          • Port 0 of the OSA Express card must be used and
          • The OSA adapter must be configured in QDIO mode (CHPID OSX or OSD).
        • If a Firewall is in place for this management network, at least HTTP/HTTPS ports (80 and 443) must be accessible for the appliance and the machine running the Web browser in this network.
We recommend to separate the management network from the dedicated Db2 network.
If IP addresses defined for the appliance and the machine running the Web browser are in different networks and network routing is implemented, the corresponding gateway must be specified during LPAR network definition.

When using an OSA Express 7s or 6s card in shared mode, the installation of D41C Bundle s80a (z15) or D51C Bundle s22a (z16) could lead to connectivity problems between Db2 for z/OS LPAR and the accelerator LPAR residing on the same mainframe server.
Shared mode means that the network traffic does not go to a switch.
        Recommendation:
If you are running a layer 2 host to a layer 3 host and using a shared OSA adapter with the OSA doing the internal routing between the LPARs, we recommend customer to update to Bundle S84a or Bundle S27 accordingly.

Note: There won't be a connectivity problem if the OSA card is shared but the internal path is not used, meaning: the network traffic is routed by an external switch.

      • Requirements for inter-node communication in multi-node installations

Why RoCE cards must be used in multi-node installations of IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator

Very high workload in multi-node installations of Db2 Analytics Accelerator on IBM zSystems can lead to inefficient query processing, resource contention, and potential system instability. Using RoCE cards will reduce IFL resource contention, ensure predictable query runtimes, and enhance operational stability.
Therefore RoCE cards must be used for the inter-node communication between LPARs instead of HiperSockets.

RoCE cards are supported with Accelerator maintenance level 7.5.10.1 or later.
For inter-node communication it is recommended to bond two 25 GbE RoCE cards.
The primary purpose of bonding is to deliver a performance increase to 50 Gb. A second purpose is to provide high availability.

Click here for information how to configure the cluster network of an accelerator multi-node installation for the use of RoCE Express cards.

Depending on the platform. This is sometimes required if you need to specify Db2 for z/OS special registers as part of the connection URL.
    • Recommended ODBC driver level
Depending on your Linux, UNIX, or Windows operating system, the minimum level for DB2 Connect Version 10.5 is fix pack 4 and the minimum level for DB2 Connect Version 10.1 is fix pack 4. To enable the special registers for query acceleration, see Enabling query acceleration with IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator for ODBC and JDBC applications without modifying the applications. Older versions of the driver might allow connections to Db2 for z/OS, but might fail to return results if timestamp columns are defined in a certain way.

      • Recommended Db2-PTFs
To determine all (Db2-)PTFs recommended for use with IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS V7, use the SMP/E REPORT MISSINGFIX command in conjunction with FIXCAT HOLDDATA as follows:

        1. Acquire and RECEIVE the latest HOLDDATA file onto your z/OS system. Use your normal service acquisition portal or download
the two (2) year HOLDDATA files here: Enhanced HOLDDATA for z/OS .
Ensure you select 'FULL' from the Download NOW column (last 730 days) to receive the FIXCAT HOLDDATA, as the other files do not contain FIXCAT HOLDDATA.
        2. Run the SMP/E REPORT MISSINGFIX command on your z/OS systems and specify
          • For V7.1: Fix Category FIXCAT (IBM.DB2.AnalyticsAccelerator.V7R1)
          • For V7.5: Fix Categories FIXCAT (IBM.DB2.AnalyticsAccelerator.V7R1, IBM.DB2.AnalyticsAccelerator.V7R5).
The report will identify missing PTFs associated with that categories on that system. For more information about the SMP/E REPORT MISSINGFIX command, see here.
        3. Periodically acquire the latest HOLDDATA file and rerun the REPORT MISSINGFIX command to determine if there are new recommended (Db2-)PTFs for IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS V7.

30 March 2021: We strongly recommend to apply both the PTFs for the APARs PH21726 and PH28050 of Db2 12 for z/OS having been marked HIPER and having got the FIXCAT keywords IDAAV5R1/K and IDAAV7R5/K. Together these PTFs resolve the following issue:
"Queries running on Db2 for z/OS are unexpectedly executed on Db2 Analytics Accelerator if QUERY ACCELERATION has been set to 'ENABLE' or 'ENABLE WITH FAILBACK'. This especially happens if queries have index access on tables with multiple indexes defined. A more costly access path will be chosen resulting in an execution of the query on the accelerator".

    • GDPS support (Accelerator on IBM Z only)
With maintenance level 7.5.1 (or higher) the integration with IBM GDPS ® (Geographically Dispersed Parallel Sysplex) for high availability and disaster recovery is supported. This requires the following GDPS product versions: GDPS Metro Global GM 3-site and 4-site configurations are supported if the PTF for APAR PH27382 has been installed.
      Note:
Please see the technote 'How to migrate DASD devices of Db2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS defined for GDPS failover support'.
The support of GDPS requires the use of the Processor Resource/Systems Manager (PR/SM) mode (rather than using the Dynamic Partition Manager (DPM) mode).
  • Incremental update
The incremental update function of IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS® allows you to update accelerator-shadow tables continually. Changes to the data in original Db2 for z/OS tables are thus propagated to the corresponding target tables with a high frequency and just a brief delay. This way, query results from an accelerator are always extracted from recent, close-to-real-time data.
    • Integrated Synchronization (release 7.5 or higher)
Integrated synchronization is a built-in product feature that makes it easy to set up incremental updates. It does not require IBM InfoSphere Data Replication for z/OS (CDC), and therefore requires fewer customization and activation steps. In addition, integrated synchronization has further advantages:

      • Reduced complexity.
      • Updates are processed very fast.
      • Reduced CPU consumption on the mainframe because most of the processing is done on the client side (accelerator).
      • On the mainframe, the workload can be handled by IBM z Systems® Integrated Information Processors (zIIP).
      • Speedier service request processing through better support channel integration
        Integrated synchronization requires
      • Db2 13 for z/OS or Db2 12 for z/OS with PTFs UI80519, UI77365, UI75930, UI71876, UI69536, and UI63356 installed, running at function level V12R1M500
      • Distributed data facility (DDF) with a secure port, configured for network encryption through AT-TLS
      • For data sharing groups: ability to always connect to the same member, for example by using a member-specific secure port that has a local alias.
      • IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS Version 7.5 for Db2 12
      • Accelerator maintenance level 7.5.8 or later for Db2 13 for z/OS
    • Incremental update (using IBM InfoSphere Data Replication for z/OS)
IBM InfoSphere Change Data Capture for z/OS (CDC) is included in the IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator product package. Please find information about the recommended CDC PTFs here.
      Note:
With Accelerator maintenance level 7.5.13, the incremental update function using IIDR/CDC requires customization of the the z/OS component Integrated Cryptographic Service Facility (ICSF) for an AES-256 encryption.
  • Administering the accelerator
IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator Studio and IBM Administration Services provide a graphical administration interface for the product.
  • IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator Loader
IBM DB2 Analytics Accelerator Loader for z/OS (further on abbreviated as 'the Loader') is a Db2 Tools product that provides capabilities and options for loading data into Db2 for z/OS and IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator. These capabilities let you select the load option that best meets your business needs when populating data in the Analytics Accelerator. For more information on the Loader see here.
For use of the Loader with IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS V7, the PTF for Loader-APAR PH37059 is mandatory.
For the list of available Loader-PTFs please see here.

    Note:
The PTF for Loader-APAR PH46656 or later maintenance levels of the Loader require the installation of the PTF for Db2 for z/OS-APAR PH45948. For further details see here.
