HPC: the future of data analytics

As high performance computing (HPC) demands grow, organizations are struggling to manage larger, more complex data sets and analytics workloads. With increasingly sophisticated machine learning and deep learning opportunities, accelerated infrastructure is essential. IBM Systems provides the solutions needed to advance HPC and AI and to solve the biggest challenges in business, medical, science and engineering industries.

HPC designed for research labs and enterprise AI

What if you had a computer that could handle more than two hundred quadrillion calculations per second, or roughly five hundred thousand times the number of stars in the Milky Way? And, could store the entire world’s social media data in one place? What if that super computer was already deployed and beginning to run test cases?

Over the past years, IBM, NVIDIA, Mellanox, and Red Hat all worked together to create Summit and Sierra for Oak Ridge (ORNL) and Lawrence Livermore (LLNL) National Labs.  These state-of-the-art supercomputers are built with everyday IBM POWER9™ processors and IBM Storage that will run traditional HPC workloads and AI workloads.  They were not developed as highly customized, one-off systems seen in previous HPC solutions. Rule number one: whatever was built for ORNL and LLNL needed to work for the enterprise, as well.

Summit is the most powerful and smartest supercomputer for science. The architecture delivers massive HPC scalability on a system purpose-built for AI. “By building these supercomputers, we are building the world’s leading AI machines,” says Hillery Hunter, IBM Fellow; Director, Accelerated Cognitive Infrastructure.

Researchers will use the computers to simulate quantum mechanics materials, explore evolutionary relationships based upon genomes, and fabricate nanomaterial using AI.

IBM builds the world's fastest supercomputers

Summit and Sierra--number 1 and number 3 on the Top500 list--are HPC systems created for Oak Ridge and Lawrence Livermore National Labs.  Built with every day IBM Power™ 9 processors and IBM Storage, they deliver massive HPC scalability on systems purpose-built for AI.

A powerful, flexible and efficient path to data insights

IBM’s HPC solutions are designed to augment human intelligence rather than simply run simulations and visualizations. The goal: to implement systems that blur the line between HPC and AI and to provide open ecosystems, because one size does not fit all.

The end of the homogenous data center is here

IDC expects that we are approaching the end of the homogeneous data center because processors other than the classic x86 are bridging the performance gap that AI applications have revealed.

From data analytics to deep learning

In 2018, 90% of the data generated daily is expected to be unstructured. The data-centric design of IBM Power Systems lets you overcome performance barriers and speed time to insight with lower total cost of ownership (TCO) and fewer, more reliable servers compared to alternatives.

The next milestone for HPC

As increasingly challenging workloads push system demands to the limit, IBM has partnered with other industry leaders to form the OpenPOWER Foundation, dedicated to stewarding the Power CPU architecture into the next generation.
