Cloud computing represents the future for most major enterprises. Are you sure that you or the professionals on your IT team have the skills to manage it?
A new IDC White Paper, sponsored by IBM and Intel, The Impact of Certification on Cloud Outcomes, lays out the detailed benefits of certification in cloud-related specialties to both IT professionals and the organizations where they work.
It also comes to some dramatic conclusions about how much training and certification a cloud team needs for the organization to reap the greatest benefits.
The advantage of a certified team is dramatic
In its study, IDC defines two types of cloud teams — those that are “fully certified,” with more than 75% of team members certified, and those that are “under-certified,” with fewer than 25% certified.
The organization, it notes, will immediately receive some benefits from even minimal amounts of certification. But as the team reaches the “fully-certified” level, performance takes a dramatic jump.
As IDC cautions in an accompanying IDC Infographic, “don't get stuck in the middle — certifying the last 25% of the team can have significant impact.”
The IDC study found, in fact, that when a team of cloud professionals is certified, it can register a 35% improvement across all key performance indicators (KPIs).
Certification creates benefits across the cloud spectrum
The IDC White Paper is full of findings that make the case for cloud certifications.
For example, IDC also reported that “fully-certified” teams complete tasks 25% faster than “under-certified” teams. On average, that’s 6.5 months versus 8.5 months.
The list goes on. “Fully-certified” teams, according to IDC, achieve the following:
- 80% greater improvement in reducing IT budget
- 64% greater improvement in extending global reach
- 74% greater improvement in modernizing enterprise applications

The IDC study leaves little doubt about the benefits of certification in cloud specialties, like the programs offered by the IBM Center for Cloud Training in areas like IBM Cloud Developer, IBM Cloud Architect, IBM Cloud DevSecOps Specialty, IBM Cloud for Financial Services Specialty and IBM Cloud Security Engineer.
