How multi-agent orchestration works

Multi-agent orchestration, sometimes called agentic orchestration, is the coordination of multiple AI agents, tools and models so they share context, divide work and complete tasks as one system. IBM® watsonx Orchestrate® coordinates agents, tools, workflows and foundation models across your enterprise from a centralized orchestration layer. It helps route work to the right specialized agent or tool in real time, reducing fragmented handoffs and improving execution across complex processes.

Use ReAct for open-ended exploration, Plan-Act for structured execution or deterministic orchestration when predictability is critical. Through the AI Gateway, teams can select and route across IBM Granite, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini, Mistral or Llama while maintaining governance, observability and auditability.
