The Role Model for Customizations – Introducing the Visual Update 1 for IBM Connections

Share this post:

Enterprise employees are expecting more “consumer-like” designs for enterprise solutions used within the workplace. As part of the IBM Connections “Pink” vision, the IBM Collaboration Solution’s Design team has been crafting a new design specification for our developers to use when building new offerings. These specifications were curated through multiple Design Thinking exercises and extensive consumer research. Driving these decisions is a focus on people. People thrive on collaboration, and use collaborative tools as an engine for innovation. IBM wants to ensure that our collaborative solutions match the way we think, augment our performance, and grant us the confidence we need to get the job done. Today, we are opening the new design for preview within IBM Connections.

In collaboration with the IBM Connections Customizer team, our designers have leveraged the newly released technology to apply the new design as a configurable application to IBM Connections Cloud from the App Catalog. The Customizer technology allows the new visual design to be layered on top of Connections, thus “overriding” the visual design prior to displaying it on the screen. To learn more about the IBM Connections Customizer technology, please refer to the blog post.

Previously known as Project “Periscope,” Visual update 1 for IBM Connections seeks to be IBM’s first Customizer-based application. Our goal is to both preview the new design, as well as to serve as a model for developers to implement their own customizations.
The Customizations You will See:
The new design creates a modern, airy, and less cluttered view by updating many items on a page, such as:

  • Buttons
  • Lists
  • Checkboxes
  • Dropdowns
  • Forms
  • Dialogs

Overall, pages will receive new coloring, fonts, spacing, and icons.  Below are two profile pictures on Connections. The profile on the left has not been customized while the right has the new design applied. You might notice that the tags have been neatly organized into pill-shaped items, the network contact profile pictures are larger and display names, and the soft blue lines have been added to tabs to create a cleaner look. These are only a few illustrations of the new experience.

Available for the preview are the following applications:

  • Files
  • Profiles
  • Contacts
  • Search
  • File Viewer

Due to the nature of the preview, Visual update 1 for IBM Connections should only be applied while using the Verse Theme (Default) on Connections and applies only to the Connections applications mentioned above. Therefore, you will experience two separate designs while using Connections, both the modernized design configured for those applications listed above as well as the current Connections designs for the remaining applications. Finally, support for bi-directional languages will not be included until all applications have been re-designed.

What’s Next?
Our preview will not stop here! Our development team is working hard to apply the new design specifications to all Connections applications, including those within Communities and more. As Connections applications are completed, the Visual update 1 for IBM Connections app will be updated so you can be the first to explore the new design.

Explore the New Design Today!
The Visual update 1 for IBM Connections preview is available for download today from the App Catalog. Organization owners can configure the app and enable/disable the new design. You can find detailed instructions here.
