Evolution of Retrieve and Rank and Document Conversion into Watson Discovery

Watson Discovery Consolidates Retrieve and Rank and Document Conversion

Watson Discovery, initially launched in December 2016, is a fully-featured cloud-native insight engine that contains the evolved capabilities of the Retrieve and Rank, Document Conversion, and AlchemyData News services.  Watson Discovery helps users unlock hidden value in data to find answers, monitor trends, and surface patterns in their own content as well as intelligence-infused news from around the globe.

Through its data-to-insight pipeline Watson Discovery offers a full suite of capabilities including unstructured and structured data ingestion, document conversion, NLP enrichment, and querying with out of the box AI capabilities such as anomaly detection, aggregate NLP analysis, and trainable machine learning based relevancy. In addition to traditional information retrieval use cases, Watson Discovery can be leveraged with conversational apps (when combined with the Watson Conversation Service), for news powered apps, as well as for content analytics scenarios like understanding the voice of your customers.

Why should I switch to Watson Discovery?

Watson Discovery supports core functionality from R&R and DCS such as conversion from PDF/Word/HTML, keyword search, natural language search, machine learning enhanced relevance, and web based tooling. It also adds many new capabilities like simple setup and configuration, reduced training complexity, an updated and robust query interface, advanced AI for information retrieval, and increased scale for large datasets. Individual APIs and features exposed through R&R and DCS are accessed differently as part of Watson Discovery – however, Watson Discovery builds upon and enhances support for the same core use cases covered by R&R and DCS.

How do I switch?

You can find a detailed migration guide, and a tutorial that steps you through the migration process.  We are also making available several tools to make your migration from R&R to Watson Discovery as smooth as possible.  As noted above, all existing customers will have 12 months to evaluate impact and determine the best path for migration to advance their applications. While not required, if you are interested in engaging with our Expert Services team for support on migrating your R&R and DCS applications, please contact us. If you have any questions related to the migration, ask us on our forum.
