Through Reinventing Education, IBM and the Boston Public Schools are working together to enable teachers to assess student work in a consistent manner that informs and strengthens their instruction.
To reach this goal, the project is implementing Riverdeep Learning Village in middle and high schools. Using the tool, teachers are able to effectively assess each student's progress toward reaching specific academic standards. Based upon their knowledge of a student's learning strengths and weaknesses, teachers are then able to tailor their instruction to help the student master necessary skills.
The district is using the technology to enable the district's Science Department to create lesson plans based upon key questions from middle and high school mid- and end-of-year exams. Examples of student work accompany each plan, including the scores they received and the reasons behind them. Teachers can study these examples and practice scoring additional student exemplars prior to administering and grading exam questions. The district's Math Department is doing similar work at the middle school level. |
