At a ceremony in Xi'an, China on December 1, IBM, the Xi'an Jiao Tong University (XJTU), and the Peoples Republic of China Ministry of Education (PRC MoE ) announced the opening of an Open Source research center focused on K12 education. The XJTU-IBM Linux Network Computer Joint Research Center will research and develop a low-cost national networked classroom teaching system to support education reform in the rural and remote regions of China. In addition to the primary participants, the project will include 12 pilot schools from six provinces, the PRC Ministry of Science and Technology, and the National Centre for Educational Technology (NCET).
According to IBM Community Relations Manager Julie Coyne, "This is a significant initiative that has the potential to provide an efficient and cost effective solution to support education reform not only here in China but around the world."
The project will leverage the successful work XJTU, one of the top nine universities in China, has already undertaken in Linux training and research into network computers and multimedia education solutions. The project also will draw on the expertise and resources developed through IBM’s Reinventing Education grant with PRC MoE by involving one of the grant schools, as well as teachers in Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan province. This collaboration promises not only to benefit Open Source research but also to support the expansion of the Reinventing Education model to schools throughout the country.
