CIO Innovation Lab
New Opportunities for Value Creation
The Center for CIO Leadership and Haim Mendelson of Stanford University conducted the CIO Innovation on April 4-5, 2011, prior to the CIO Leadership Exchange. The four-session program was developed to help establish value creation models that align the IT organization with CEO interests and line of business needs. This interactive session provided CIOs with the opportunity to evaluate the unique areas of differentiation and competitive advantage that are enabling their enterprises to grow, and assess the contribution and value that technology is delivering. The program featured leading value creation research and integrated practical case studies for real-time analysis that enabled CIOs to uncover the strategic and practical approaches to building a powerful business case.
Session 1: Value Creation Models and the Role of Information Technology
Through an interactive case approach, CIOs examined current research on value creation models, the role of IT, and how that role translates into financial performance.
Session 2: Applying the Framework
CIOs applied principles from Session 1 as they examined the Charles Schwab Case Study. Teams of CIOs studied how an organization's value creation model and its IT organization should be repositioned to address the strategic challenges it is facing going forward.
Session 3: Value Creation Lab - The Charles Schwab Corporation
Jan Hier-King, EVP of Shared Support Services at Charles Schwab joined the session and provided an in-depth examination of the value creation approaches that she developed in building a successful case for transformation.
Session 4: Value Delivered
The program concluded as participants continued to progress the value models developed over the course of the four sessions and applied the framework for engaging the rest of the C-suite in the value model developed. The framework discussed in this program will help participants evolve and apply the models in their own environments.
