Share this post:

World of Watson kicks on the 24th of October! Whether you’re going to be there in person or if you’re going to be joining the conference through the IBM app, we’ll be covering everything that you need to know about Bluemix and the conference right here.

This post will whet your appetite for some of the sessions that are available to conference attendees and are special interest to Bluemix developers. Need more suggestions? Have Watson help you build your own agenda! To get a preview of some of the activities of interest to developers in the Redefining Development Zone at World of Watson, you can watch this video.

Building Cognitive Event-Driven, Serverless Apps in IBM Bluemix, Based on OpenWhisk

  • Why: Businesses need solutions based around analytics, cognitive, Internet of Things, and so on that are cost effective against the resource that they use. Also, they need these solutions to be built at rapid pace—hours, not days. So, how about a cloud-first model that charges literally for the code that runs, and nothing more? That’s OpenWhisk.
  • Overview: This presentation introduces the IBM approach to serverless computing, based on the OpenWhisk project. The discussion will cover cognitive usage scenarios, user benefits and architecture, and also provide a brief demo.
  • When/Where: Monday, October 24th, 8:00 AM – 8:45 AM | Jasmine F | Session ID: 2493A
  • Presenter: Michael Man Behrendt, IBM

Building a Video Analytics Platform with IBM Watson, Bluemix, and IBM Cloud Object Storage

  • Why: When 84{07c2b926d154bd5dc241f595a572d3349d41d98f2484798a4a616f4fafe1ebc0} of Internet traffic is predicted to be video by 2018, there’s a real reason to be able to understand, analyze, and then ultimately draw value from such vast amounts of data. Using a cognitive system that learns like Watson is one of the only ways to be able to do this efficiently.
  • Overview: Walk through BlueChasm’s process to build Video Recon, which is a first-of-its-kind cognitive video analytics application on IBM platforms, including Watson, Bluemix, IBM Cloud Object Storage, Cloudant and IBM Systems. Video Recon uses Watson’s Visual Recognition service on Bluemix to look at a video and auto-tag it based on what Watson “sees” using machine learning technology.
  • When/Where: Monday, October 24th, 9:00 AM – 9:45 AM | Jasmine F | Session ID: 1270A
  • Presenters: Ryan VanAlstine and Robert Rios, BlueChasm

Ask Me about Drones, IoT, Serverless, Cognitive Computing and Cloud!

  • Why: Drones are playing a vital role in modern photography. They also offer the ability to capture high quality video imagery for industries that need to be able to access hard-to-reach areas and cover large areas like agriculture, wildlife preservation, surveying, mapping & 3D modeling, law enforcement, and many more. By using cognitive services like Watson Visual Recognition and Bluemix services, any development team can build industry-shaping, drone-based solutions.
  • Overview: Learn and ask questions about cloud-connected drones, image analysis using IBM Watson, serverless computing, Swift on the server, Node.js, or just Bluemix in general! See a live demo of cloud-connected drone hardware that leverages IBM Bluemix and IBM Watson to automatically deliver images and data to the cloud and analyze it in near real-time.
  • When/Where: Tuesday, October 25th, 2:30 PM – 2:50 PM | Redefining Development Theatre | Session: 3911. Watch it live on Ustream here.
  • When/Where: Tuesday, October 25th, 5:00-5:45 pm | Micro Theater Level 3 | Session ID: 3043
  • Presenter: Andrew Trice, IBM

Hybrid Cloud Strategy for Big Data and Analytics

  • Why: One of the best parts of the emergence of cloud technologies is the flexibility that comes with developing applications and solutions for your clients. Platforms like Bluemix enable companies to develop cloud-based solutions that connect to their existing applications, solutions, or back-end systems.
  • Overview: How do you decide where to put data on a hybrid cloud and how to use it? What’s the best hybrid cloud strategy in terms of data and workload? How should you leverage the 80/20 rule and user interaction to evaluate which data/workload to move to the cloud and which data/workload to keep on-premises? This session will answer these questions.
  • When/Where: Tuesday, October 25th, 2:00 PM – 2:45 PM | Breakers G | Session ID: 1514A
  • Presenter: Marcio Moura, IBM

How the IBM Cloud Helps Humans Drive Safely

  • Why: With the focus of understanding that the vast majority of traffic incidents happen when a driver has a lapse in concentration, Honda is looking to bridge the gap between where we are today and tomorrow’s fully-automated cars. Honda will demonstrate how they’re using the powerful cognitive services of IBM Watson on Bluemix to help deliver a safer driving experience.
  • Overview: Hear first-hand how Honda R&D built a rapid Driving Coach prototype in under two months to engage drivers in vulnerable situations. Learn how startup RoadBuddy powers a warning system to alert drivers and save lives in congested motorways. Find out how an EU consortium is solving cross-border interoperability issues to develop a network and marketplace of electronic charging stations.
  • When/Where: Tuesday, October 25th, 3:00 PM – 3:45 PM | Micro Theater Level 3 | Session ID: 2726A
  • Presenters: Pamela Chace, IBM; Yoshimitsu Akuta, Honda R&D Company, Ltd.

Streaming Video’s Next-Gen Recommendation Engine

  • Why: Ever whiled away hours on YouTube? Have you gone from social media video to social media video until realizing that yes, it is 2am, and maybe you should head to bed? Learn how cognitive solutions can make these types of interactions more impactful, more meaningful, and more enjoyable.
  • Overview: To continue to evolve the viewer experience, content owners and streaming service providers must push the limits of today’s search and discovery status quo, in favor of a next-gen recommendation engine. With a wealth of untapped social media and personality insights, IBM Cloud Video has the ability to see a complete picture of an individual viewer and leverage these insights to only present highly relevant recommendations.
  • When/Where: Wednesday, 4:00 PM – 4:45 PM | Jasmine F | Session ID: 3087A
  • Presenter: David Kulczar, IBM

Quest Diagnostics Hackathon with IBM Bluemix

  • Why: Whether it’s a competitive hackathon with cash prizes or an internal hackathon with your best team and a blank canvas, they’ve proven to be effective to not only teach how to use Bluemix, but also teach valuable methodologies such IBM Design thinking. Quest Diagnostics, which is a multi-billion dollar clinical laboratory with bases all around the world, used Bluemix as their platform of choice when running their own hackathon. The hackathon explored the possibility of improving the flow from data to actionable outcomes.
  • Overview: Quest Diagnostics and IBM held a Mission Impossible-themed challenge to create a new, user-friendly, easy-to-use recognition system. In a very rapid and agile manner, the participants created some highly responsive apps that utilized various Bluemix services like IBM MobileFirst, Watson, DevOps, IoT, Cloudant and Business Analytics. Come explore the advantages of using cloud services to speed up development by reducing cost and maintenance.
  • When/Where: Thursday, October 27th, 10:00 AM – 10:45 AM | Jasmine F | Session ID: 2253A
  • Presenter: Upender Bathini, Quest Diagnostics Inc

Before you leave for the conference, don’t forget to sign up for your free 30-day trial of Bluemix so you can try what you’ve learned and ask questions. If you can’t make it, be sure to check out IBMGO for livestream sessions.
