Resolving The Problem

IBM 3502 Tape Library setup and troubleshooting

Follow these steps in sequence to troubleshoot problems with your 3502 tape library. Click on the appropriate link for your tape library model underneath a step, then use your browsers Back button to return to this document and continue troubleshooting.

These instructions apply to the 3502-108, 3502-314, and 3502-R14 Tape Libraries.

  1. Verify that the cabling is correct for your tape library.

  2. Ensure the SCSI IDs are set properly on the tape library using the Select button.

  3. Ensure the proper modes and options are set on the tape library using the Select button.

    Mode
    Enabled
    Purpose
    RANDOM
    Y
    RANDOM mode allows the library to automatically load any cartridge from any magazine in the load cycle. Make sure this mode is selected in all IBM Intel-based server configurations.
    SEQUENTIAL
    N
    SEQUENTIAL mode instructs the library to load cartridges sequentially from the lowest magazine and slot position. This mode is supported only in RISC 6000/AIX400 platform configurations.
    SEQUENTIAL CIRC
    N
    SEQUENTIAL CIRC mode restarts the sequential loading sequence again from the first available slot. This mode is supported only in RISC 6000/AIX400 platform configurations.
    AUTOLOAD CART
    N
    AUTOLOAD CART mode enables the library to load cartridges following an open/close door. This mode functions only with SEQ and SEQ CIRC enabled, and is only supported in RISC 6000/AIX400 platforms.
    ENABLE BARCODE
    Y or N
    Set this mode to Y when a barcode is installed, otherwise set it to N.
    AUTO CLEAN
    Y
    When AUTO CLEAN mode is enabled, the library will automatically clean drives when it is required. (Default = N).

  4. Ensure the SCSI host adapter BIOS is at the latest level at system startup.

  5. Install the tape software.

  6. Troubleshoot any tape library error messages.

  7. If the 3502 Tape Library is still not working:
    a) Disconnect the SCSI cable from the host adapter.
    b) Recycle (power-off/on) the 3502 until you see "Library Idle" on the display panel.
    c) Press button 1 (down arrow) (3502-108) or the Next button (3502-314/R14). A message will be displayed on the display panel.
    d) Review these Message tables to see if a problem exists that needs a FRU replacement:

    M =

    a. No media is present in the magazine slot and the metal tab is up. This could cause the library not to function properly during OCP tests and possible robotic hardware failure messages in your backup software.

    b. The loader arm alignment is off. 

    Action Plan: If tabs are up and no media is present, remove the magazine and push the black cartridge sliding guide back until it clicks. If tabs are down, replace the autoloader assembly.
