NetApp Agent v7.3 FP2 (ITMfVE Downloadable version 7.2 FP7) (Released 23 April 2021)

The following enhancements were made in this release:
  • Added Prerequisite checker support to enable scanning of prerequisites before installation.
  • Defect fixed in generating SDA jars for an agent.
  • If the connection fails, the agent would continuously attempt connection to the data source without limit every 30 seconds. Such agent behavior remains even though the user removed the environment variable KNU_DATA_PROVIDER_CONNECTION_RETRY_COUNT or set it to 0. To have a limited number of connection attempts, the environment variable KNU_DATA_PROVIDER_CONNECTION_RETRY_COUNT must be set to a valid nonzero value.
  • Agent JRE is upgraded to version: 1.8.0_241.

  • The entire UI for the NetApp agent is enhanced to show a more graphical representation of key attributes. According to the new features offered by OnCommand or Active IQ Unified Manager, UI changes are also applicable for existing workspaces of Aggregates, Qtrees, Disks, Volume, and Luns.
  • Each workspace is updated to show its associated list of Events to allow an administrator to know how critical a storage entity is and where the administrative action is required on priority.
  • The Qtree Detail workspace has been deprecated since this release.
  • The Configuration panel is enhanced to accept a port for the OnCommand API Service.
  • Each attribute’s help text is updated to indicate the source of data, whether it is collected from OCUM or OCUM API Services.
  • Agent JRE is upgraded to Java 8.
  • Retry count to limit connection attempts with the data source:
If the connection fails, add a limit on the number of retries the agent attempts to connect to the data source (OnCommand Unified Manager). The default for retry attempts is 6. This value can be changed by setting the following variable in the agent instance-specific environment file:
    KNU_DATA_PROVIDER_CONNECTION_RETRY_COUNT
After exhausting the limit of configured connection attempts, if an agent fails to connect to the data source, it will stop attempting to connect and log the following message in the data provider log:
NO MORE ATTEMPTS OF CONNECTION; STOPPING THE DATA COLLECTION, TO RESUME MONITORING PLEASE RESTART THE AGENT. TO HAVE MORE ATTEMPT OF CONNECTIONS, RESET THE VALUE OF THE VARIABLE KNU_DATA_PROVIDER_CONNECTION_RETRY_COUNT

Abstract: SDA support for NetApp agent.
Description:
NetApp agent is not defined as a self-describing agent, so the user needs to install the application support manually.

NetApp Agent v7.1.0-TIV-ITM-NETAPP-IF0001

NetApp Agent v7.2.0.3-TIV-ITM-NETAPP-IF0001

IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Virtual Servers: NetApp 7.3.0.3-TIV-ITM_NETAPP-IF0001

General considerations

NetApp Storage Agent v7.1.0

  • The prerequisite is IBM Tivoli Monitoring V6.2.2 Fix Pack 2 or later.
  • The agent package on Passport Advantage and Extreme Leverage is:
IBM Tivoli Monitoring for Virtual Environments 7.1 VMware VI, KVM, NetApp Storage, and NMA Agents and Support Files Windows and Linux English (CI56TEN)

Functions of the monitoring agent

The NetApp Storage agent provides the following functions:

  • Displays the health and performance of NetApp and IBM N series storage systems.
You can use the NetApp Storage agent to visualize the capacity, latency, and throughput performance metrics of NetApp and IBM N series storage systems.
  • Helps identify poorly performing storage system objects.
The NetApp Storage agent collects several important performance metrics for four important NetApp storage objects: hosts (filers), aggregates, volumes, and logical unit numbers (LUNs). The agent sorts object lists by performance metrics to show the least healthy or busiest objects at the top; and displays trend graphs of the same performance metrics when showing an object in detail.
  • Interoperates with the VMware VI agent.
The NetApp Storage agent inter-operates with the IBM Tivoli® Monitoring for Virtual Servers Agent for VMware VI and provides data sharing and workspace linking between the NetApp Storage agent and the VMware VI agent. The detailed workspaces for NFS data stores in the VMware VI agent show detailed data about the related NetApp volume. When you click a link from that VMware VI data store workspace, it takes you to the detailed workspace of the related volume in the NetApp Storage agent.
  • Helps isolate VM guest performance problems.
You can use the NetApp agent to isolate performance problems in the NetApp storage systems, and with the VMware VI agent, you can see how the storage system problems affect the VM guest performance. Links within the NetApp Storage agent workspaces make it easy to navigate to the hierarchy of the NetApp storage system objects where you can see the status and performance metrics of related objects.
  • Performs discovery and monitoring with the DFM server focal point.
Each agent instance connects to a single NetApp DFM server. The DFM server discovers the objects in the NetApp storage system. Only one set of user credentials is required to monitor all the objects in the storage system. Further agent instances can monitor extra DFM servers that allow operational monitoring of large NetApp storage installations from a single Tivoli Enterprise Portal.

Common questions

  • How do I change the default port that the NetApp Storage Agent uses to connect to the NetApp(R) DataFabric Manager (DFM) server?

Common problems

  1. Data not displaying in workspaces.
    • If the knu_data_provider_<instance>_0.log has this line:
SEVERE: FactoryInterfaceController$3.uncaughtException: Class loading error; cannot continue
Ensure that manageontap.jar is in the data provider's classpath, then verify that the manageontap.jar file is copied to the agent installation directory (see the User's Guide).
    • Verify that the DFM server user ID and password are correct.
    • Verify that the DFM user has GlobalRead authority.
  2. The NetApp Storage Agent shows objects but not their performance data.
    • Verify that the DFM server is given the user ID and password of each host.
    • Verify that the hosts are configured to collect performance data.
  3. The VMware VI Agent does not show the Volume data on the data store detail workspace.
    • The datastore must be NFS mounted and must be NetApp storage.
    • The NetApp Storage agent's managed system name (MSN) must be supplied in the configuration of the VMware VI agent.
  4. Enabling NetApp agent to work with various protocols configured on OnCommand components:
    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/712261
  5. Configuring NetApp agent to communicate with OnCommand Unified Manager 9.version.
    https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/957471
  6. Netapp Storage Agent reports are not supported on OnCommand Unified Manager (OCUM) Version 6.x and later versions.
