Business challenge story

The world’s largest “people search engine”

As personal identity data continues to proliferate, PIPL offers sophisticated search capabilities to help companies perform business-critical identity verification processes quickly and effectively. “PIPL has online and offline data about more than three billion people in the world,” says Billy Attar, Director of Marketing for PIPL. “We serve top e-commerce sites, banks and insurance companies and help them with everything from investigations and recruiting to data enrichment.”

To deliver its services to organizations worldwide, PIPL needed a scalable cloud hosting platform offering abundant raw computing power to meet its performance standards. Additionally, the company sought highly flexible infrastructure with a network designed to support rapid, cost-effective data transfer between sites.

We can deploy bare metal servers very quickly, which allows us to get more done and serve more customers.

Transformation story

A flexible, high-performance IBM Cloud solution

An IBM Cloud hosting solution offered the high-performance technology and flexible deployment options PIPL required. Provisioning IBM Cloud infrastructure in Dallas, Texas, and Seattle, Washington, to host its product suite, the company serves customers throughout North America, South America, Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.

“We’re essentially a big data company with two types of workloads,” explains Stas Goshtein, Director of DevOps for PIPL. “We have our production workloads, which are basically customers using our API [application programming interface] or our website to perform searches on existing data, and our processes in the background, where we’re adding or duplicating data. With IBM Cloud, we can choose between bare metal or virtual servers to support different workloads as we need to.”

Results story

Greater agility for a rapidly growing business

The IBM Cloud solution provides the powerful, scalable infrastructure PIPL needs to keep up with its increasing business demands. “When we have a new customer that is adding a large data load, we can bring additional cloud resources online as needed,” says Goshtein. “We can deploy bare metal servers very quickly, which allows us to get more done and serve more customers.”

Plus, with IBM Cloud infrastructure, PIPL rapidly and seamlessly transfers data between sites, at no additional charge. “When we have a data scientist working on a new project, we need to essentially move a whole data infrastructure, which can be tens of terabytes,” says Goshtein. “With the IBM network, we do this quickly and easily.”

Finally, with data center locations worldwide, the IBM Cloud hosting platform can support PIPL as its business continues to expand. “We are growing rapidly overall and expanding geographically, especially into Latin America,” says Attar. “And in the past year, we launched the professional version of our search engine, which opens up a lot of additional new markets for us.”
