Exciting updates for those who use the VPC solution tutorials.

We are happy to announce that the companion scripts for VPC solution tutorials are now updated and ready to be used with the latest version of Terraform (0.12) and with IBM Cloud Terraform Provider 1.0.0.

A virtual private cloud (VPC) is a secure, isolated virtual network that combines the security of a private cloud with the availability and scalability of IBM’s public cloud.

For a deeper background, see our video “What is a Virtual Private Cloud?”:

VPC gives your applications logical isolation from other networks, while providing scalability and security. To make this logical isolation possible, the VPC is divided into subnets that use a range of private IP addresses. You can create subnets in suggested prefix ranges or bring your own public IP address range (BYOIP) to your IBM Cloud account. By default, all resources within the same VPC can communicate with each other over the private network, regardless of their subnet.

Terraform is the Infrastructure as Code (IaC) offering from HashiCorp. It is a tool for building, changing, and managing infrastructure in a safe, repeatable way. Operators and Infrastructure teams can use Terraform to manage environments with a configuration language called the HashiCorp Configuration Language (HCL) for human-readable, automated deployments.

Terraform 0.12 is a major update that includes dozens of improvements and features spanning the breadth and depth of Terraform’s functionality.

The solution tutorials guide you to learn how to build, deploy and scale real-world solutions on IBM Cloud. These guides provide step-by-step instructions on how to use IBM Cloud to implement common patterns based on best practices and proven technologies.

Bigger isn’t always better: How hybrid AI pattern enables smaller language models

5 min read - As large language models (LLMs) have entered the common vernacular, people have discovered how to use apps that access them. Modern AI tools can generate, create, summarize, translate, classify and even converse. Tools in the generative AI domain allow us to generate responses to prompts after learning from existing artifacts. One area that has not seen much innovation is at the far edge and on constrained devices. We see some versions of AI apps running locally on mobile devices with…
