Installing the Db2 for z/OS maintenance

Data Gate for watsonx supports different Db2 for z/OS versions. You must install several program temporary fixes (PTFs) for the version that you use.

About this task

Currently, Data Gate for watsonx supports these versions of Db2 for z/OS:

  • Db2 for z/OS 13 (basic Function Level)
  • Db2 for z/OS 12, Function Level 505 or higher.
Note: The following lists of APAR fixes for Db2 for z/OS include links that take you directly to the APAR descriptions. These description pages provide you with a link to obtain the required PTFs from the IBM Shopz website. You can also search for particular APAR numbers from the IBM Shopz website.

Important:

Make sure to apply the fixes for both APARs, PH21726 and PH28050. You can apply these APAR fixes separately by using the FIXCAT keywords IDAAV5R1/K and IDAAV7R5/K. Together, these fixes solve the following issue: "Queries running on Db2 for z/OS are unexpectedly executed on IBM Db2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS if QUERY ACCELERATION has been set to 'ENABLE' or 'ENABLE WITH FAILBACK'. This especially happens if queries have index access on tables with multiple indexes defined. A more costly access path will be chosen resulting in an execution of the query on the accelerator".

Installation hint:

To install all the required and recommended fixes, you can apply the latest fix category. To determine all Db2 for z/OS PTFs recommended for use with Data Gate for watsonx, use the SMP/E REPORT MISSINGFIX command with FIXCAT HOLDDATA as follows:

  1. Acquire and RECEIVE the latest HOLDDATA file onto your z/OS system. Use your normal service acquisition portal or download the two year HOLDDATA files here: Enhanced HOLDDATA for z/OS .

    Ensure you select 'FULL' from the Download NOW column (last 730 days) to receive the FIXCAT HOLDDATA, as the other files do not contain FIXCAT HOLDDATA.

  2. Run the SMP/E command REPORT MISSINGFIX on your z/OS systems and specify:
    FIXCAT (IBM.DB2.AnalyticsAccelerator.V7R1, IBM.DB2.AnalyticsAccelerator.V7R5)
    Note: Data Gate for watsonx and IBM® Db2 Analytics Accelerator for z/OS require the same Db2 for z/OS PTFs. Hence, it is correct to specify FIXCAT (IBM.DB2.AnalyticsAccelerator.V7R1, IBM.DB2.AnalyticsAccelerator.V7R5).

    The report identifies missing PTFs associated with the categories on that system. For more information about the SMP/E command REPORT MISSINGFIX, see Example: Using REPORT MISSINGFIX.

The instructions work in much the same way for Data Gate for watsonx.

Procedure

Run SMP/E to apply the fixes. For each fix, follow the instructions on the IBM Shopz website.
