IBM HTTP Server (IHS)

IBM HTTP Server is an IBM implementation based on the Apache HTTP Server. It is a robust, high-performance web server used to handle HTTP requests from clients (e.g., web browsers) and pass them to the application server for dynamic content processing (using the Web server plugin).

It is provided with WebSphere Application Server (WAS) and is only supported when used in a WAS environment along with the plugin. While based on Apache HTTPd server, it is not an exact copy of Apache HTTPd and doesn’t include all Apache modules and features.

Key functions of IHS include:

Request Handling: It processes incoming HTTP requests from clients and serves static content like HTML page and images directly. For dynamic content it can route the requests to the Websphere servers using the Web server plugin. Security: Using mod_ibm_ssl it provides security protocols (SSL/TLS) to handle encrypted communication between clients and servers.
