IBM Quantum offers advanced system access to academic researchers

IBM Quantum just launched the IBM Quantum Researchers Program to enable academic researchers to perform advance scientific work in quantum. Our new program provides higher priority access to our growing number of 5-qubit quantum systems, and greater share of system capacity to do research — at no cost to the researcher.

Researchers with projects that require deeper access to these systems, including microwave pulse control, may apply for special grants to perform projects for periods of time sufficient to complete experiments and publish papers.

IBM through this new program is committed to enable and support the burgeoning community of researchers around the world who are approaching the field and exploring the ways in which they can contribute.

The present stage in the development of the field of quantum computing is full of early successes, along with many opportunities for important work that can lead to astonishing breakthroughs in the future. We are extremely excited about what the future holds for the technology and its applications, and just as excited at the prospect of collaborating with the community of researchers who are enthusiastically engaging the challenges at every level. This unique early stage technology has both immense potential, and fundamental challenges that need to be tackled for that potential to be unlocked.

The IBM Quantum Researchers Program provides access with higher share of the 5-qubit systems. Researchers will also be able to reserve time during which their jobs jump to the front of the queue with priority mode queuing. A private Slack channel will facilitate community discussion. The program is open to researchers in the field and is provided at no cost. Researchers can sign up now!

Researcher program: Priority mode

The IBM Quantum Researchers Program also provides a way for researchers to apply for even deeper access for periods of time sufficient to complete experiments and publish papers. These access awards are geared to those defined, time-bounded projects which require pulse level access on more than the 1-qubit pulse access-enabled machine available to the general public.

In addition, projects granted pulse access will be able to reserve time on that system for their exclusive use. Researchers may submit their application to this program with a brief proposal and will be contacted to begin the process of evaluation and approval. This program is also provided at no cost, though the research team should plan to write a brief summary describing their work and acknowledge IBM Quantum in any resulting publications. Researcher program: Dedicated Mode

For users who need access to the most advanced systems available today, they can obtain access through the IBM Q Network and especially at IBM Q Network Hubs in partnership with universities and government research institutions. Many of these systems have Quantum Volume 32, and include quantum systems with 20 qubits, 27 qubits, and 53 qubits, and allow for the study and development of applications that reach the limit of what is simulatable on today’s classical computers.
