IBM and the Unitary Fund Unite for Open Source Projects for Quantum Computing

Today, we are pleased to announce our support to grow the community of quantum enthusiasts and explorers, by partnering with the Unitary Fund to provide funding for grants and priority access to certain IBM Quantum systems. Similar to IBM’s quantum computing mission, the Unitary Fund wants to create a quantum technology industry that benefits the most people. It does so through a ‘micro-grants’ program. Applicants provide a simple explanation for their project; if funded, awardees receive half of the award up front to kick-start the project, and the remainder about halfway through. Since the launch of the program, the Unitary Fund has funded six projects which are interoperable with Qiskit.

Ever since the 2016 launch of the IBM Quantum Experience, the world’s first publicly-available cloud quantum computing platform, we’ve seen the appetite for quantum computing technology accelerate around the world. There’s a strong interest and intellectual curiosity in researching, experimenting and exploring quantum computing. For example, at our Qiskit Camps, we have seen the incredible tools, applications, and even games that the community has created. All of this is facilitated by building publicly accessible systems and developing an extensible, open-source programmable software stack.

At IBM Quantum, we believe that regardless of your background, if you are interested in quantum computing, you should have a chance to experience it. What’s more, we know the community becomes quantum-ready by having access to open-source code and software. Supporting the community is synonymous with supporting open source.

By hosting Qiskit Camps in the United States, Europe, South Africa, and Japan, helping out with local hackathons, and directly funding Qiskit projects via our IBM Quantum Awards program, we have seen that significant ideas originate when people — from students, researchers, developers, and educators — are simply given the opportunity to collaborate and experiment. Consider these statistics highlighting the strong community and ecosystem that has been built by IBM Quantum in just three years: 170,000+ users have run more than 100B executions across all systems, downloaded Qiskit more than 260,000+ times, and published more than 200+ third-party research papers.

Our collaboration with the Unitary Fund enables us to further develop a more active community around quantum computing that welcomes and fosters newcomers to the field, help them become quantum ready, and prepare them to take advantage of this new technology.

We’re excited to see what that future holds, and look forward to seeing what gets built after the next round of Unitary Fund grants.
