Setting up a system through the Canvas
Typically, you set up a project and add storage systems as described in the “Creating a project” section. However, the Canvas tab gives you an alternative way to add and configure storage systems.
1. Launch Storage Modeller. The Projects perspective is displayed.
2. Click the New Project button, and enter a project name and description, and click Submit. The “Projects / project_name / Products list” is displayed.
3. Click the Canvas tab. An empty “Site #1” is displayed.
 
Note: You can rename Site #1 at any time. You can even specify a geographical location for the site, by using the Find GPS Coordinates button for the address of the site that you define. See “Sites tab (display details on project sites)”.
4. Right-click the canvas and select Add / Add Host as shown in Figure 37. The Add Host dialog box is displayed.
The “Hosts tab (configure the hosts in a project)” section describes the options for this dialog box. Keep in mind these basic points:
 – Hosts serve as a container for workloads.
 – Workloads assess the performance of your storage model.
 – To create a valid workload, the associated host must have at least one set of host adapters.

5. Right-click the canvas and select Add / Add Storage. The product catalog for Storage families is displayed.
a. Select the device family and model that you want. The New Storage System dialog box is displayed, where you provide a name, a site assignment as needed.
b. Click Submit. A new tile is added to the canvas to represent the new storage system in the canvas.
Storage Modeller takes you to the Products / System tab for the new system. (See the “Hosts tab (configure the hosts in a project)” section.) There, you can add adapters, capacity, and other attributes to the device.
6. From the Canvas tab, you can modify the pooling structure as follows:
Right-click the tile for a storage system, and select Add / Pool.
 
Note: Storage Modeller does not literally add a pool at this point. Instead, it takes you to the Products / System sub-tab for the storage system. There, you configure the pooling of drive space.
The configuration options that the Canvas provides through the tile of a new storage device, like the “System 9100 #1” tile example in Figure 38 on page 35, are summarized as follows:
Left-click the tile to access the Products / System tab. There, you add/modify the system’s configuration, including capacity.
Right-click the tile (Figure 38) to access options in the drop-down menu:
 – Add Pool: Access the Products / Capacity view for the device, where many pool configuration options are found.
 – Virtualize/Devirtualize: For devices in the IBM Storage Virtualize family that have pools defined, you toggle this option to create/remove a new Virtualizing Controller or select an existing system. See “Virtualized pools”.
 – Edit: Display the System tab for the device, where you can make changes.
 – Duplicate: Duplicate the Storage system
 – Delete: Delete the storage system.
Right-click a pool label (for example, “Pool #1” in) to access its options in the Canvas:
Virtualize/Devirtualize, Edit, and Delete.
