The IBM System 9100 system has two different types of enclosures: control enclosures and expansion enclosures.
A control enclosure (model AF7 or AF8) manages your storage systems, communicates with the host, and manages interfaces. In addition, it can house up to 24 NVMe-capable drives. These drives can be either industry-standard NVMe type or the exclusive IBM FlashCore Module(FCM).
An expansion enclosure (model AFF and/or A9F) allows you to increase the available capacity of the IBM System 9100 cluster. It communicates with the control enclosure via a dual pair of 12Gbps SAS connections. These expansion enclosures can house a large number of (SSD) SAS type drives, depending on which model of enclosure is ordered.
Each system having one controller and zero or more expansion enclosures. Scale Up and Out options by adding up to four Control Enclosures and AFF/A9F expansion enclosures are shown in Figure 320 on page 372.
