Process review: import and ingest
To ingest imported data into a workload, you complete this general process:
1. Consider options that might affect your choice to import performance data or to manually configure performance
data in your workload form, including the following topics:
2. As needed, import a valid data record that you want to use in your workload, as described in,
“Importing data for performance assessments”. (Manual entry of performance-related data is the alternative to importing data.)
3. Start creating (or modifying) a workload to assess performance of the system you are designing. See these
explanatory topics:
– Generic example:

– A specific example of the overall procedure is provided here:

Manual entry and ingestion: separate approaches
In Storage Modeller,
manual entry and ingestion are separate approaches to getting data for a workload. Unlike manual entry, you
cannot directly modify the statistics that ingestion contributes to a workload. After ingestion, these fields are grayed out and cannot be modified (see the red box in
Figure 100 on page 113).

Nonetheless, you can respond to customer priorities by using the
Selected Peak and Future Growth (%) options.
Customizing the result of an ingestion in the Workloads form
Several options allow you to customize the results of an ingestion in response to customer priorities. Two of these customization options are located above the grayed-out statistical
fields that you see in the red box in
Figure 100:
▪Option 1, Selected Peak:
Specify the peak metric that you want to reference in the performance assessment of this workload. The default metric is
Total I/O Rate. Your selection of an alternative peak metric generates an update in the grayed-out statistical fields that you see in
Figure 100. The peak-metric options to select
include metrics in the following areas:
– I/O Rate
• Read I/O Rate
• Write I/O Rate
• Total I/O Rate
– Data Rate (specifically data transfer rate)
• Read Data Rate
• Write Data Rate
• Total Data Rate
– Response Time
• Read Response Time
• Write Response Time
• Overall Response Time
▪Option 2, Future Growth (%): Enter a percentage value for the growth that a customer might want you to model in Storage Modeller. Then, the
workload’s assessment will include this projected future growth percentage. (Even a negative Future Growth value is valid for your model.)
▪Option 3, Change your Workload Source setting:
a. To do ingestion initially, you select
Generated from Imported Data
in the Workload Source field.
b. Then, to customize the results from a data importation, you can change the
Workload Source setting to Manually entered.
You see a warning message that some settings in the Workloads form will be lost. However, the data in the imported-statistics fields persist. Now you are in
Manually entered mode, and you can modify the fields that were previously grayed out (as shown in
Figure 100 on page 113).
