IBM Storage Protect Supported Devices for AIX®, HP-UX, Solaris, and Windows®

Fix Level Requirement

New devices added to this device list may require a specified fix level.  If you are a standard licensed customer that has purchased the appropriate device support and need a specific fix level, download the fix level from our IBM Storage Protect download page. Notice

The platform fields in the table below (AIX®, HP-UX, Solaris, and Windows®) identify the IBM Storage Protect server platforms and minimum fix level required to support the device. Some devices may require advanced device support. Refer to the table legend. When either a unique level is specified such as 7.1.0 or base level is specified, it indicates that support for that device exists starting at that level and for all follow on levels or releases. When "Base," is specified, the following base level is assumed. The base levels ( minimum fix level required to support the device ) are: Version 6, Release 3, Mod 0, Fix Level 00.

SCSI, Fibre Chanel, iSCSI, and SAS

We support SCSI, Fibre Channel, iSCSI, and SAS connections to all of the devices on this device list as long as the connection is supported by the hardware vendor.

SAN device mapping and SAN discovery are supported on AIX, Linux, Solaris, and Windows. For information about supported HBAs and required HBA drivers for SAN device mapping, see Technote 1193154 .

IBM validation program for network-attached storage (NAS) devices

IBM Storage Protect supports NAS devices that are validated by IBM or NAS vendors. NAS devices that are validated by the program are added to the list of supported devices for IBM Storage Protect. To find the latest list of supported NAS devices, see the NAS section on this page.

To be validated as an IBM Storage Protect NAS device, the device must undergo tests that are defined by IBM to determine that the device meets requirements for functionality and performance.

You can start the process to validate your NAS-compatible device with IBM Storage Protect by sending an email to IBM at ibmsps3@us.ibm.com. In the email, include your contact information, company name, and a description of the NAS device.

Restriction: Support is not provided for any vendor-specific features that are configured on the device.

Device Drivers Supported

IBM Storage Protect supports the following device drivers:

  • The IBM Storage Protect device driver which is supplied with IBM Storage Protect
  • IBM device drivers (atape on AIX, IBMTape on Windows, lin_tape on Linux) which are required for some devices. If a device requires an IBM device driver, it is noted next to the device name. IBM device drivers are available at IBM Fix Central .
  • Third party vendor device drivers as long as the drivers are supported on the devices by the vendors. The devices must be defined to IBM Storage Protect as device class "GENERICTAPE".

The IBM Storage Protect device driver has different code paths for Libraries and Drives. As a result if a Library is supported by the IBM Storage Protect device driver then any IBM Storage Protect supported drive will be supported in that library as long as the hardware vendor supports that combination of hardware. This is true for Tape and Optical. For example, if a library is supported in 6.3.4 and a drive is supported in 7.1.0, the drive will be supported in the library in 7.1.0. If a drive is supported in 6.3.4 and a library is supported in 7.1.0, the drive will be supported in the library in 7.1.0.

How to obtain defect support

For devices and integrations validated through Ready for IBM Storage, initial support is provided by the software vendor or hardware provider. 

Please contact IBM Tape Support for situations related to the following products:

  • IBM tape libraries
  • IBM tape drives
  • The IBM device driver when used with physical IBM tape libraries or drives

Please contact IBM Storage Protect Support for the following:

  • non-IBM physical tape libraries with IBM LTO tape drives - see Note
  • non-IBM virtual tape libraries emulating IBM tape drives or IBM tape libraries - see Note
  • non-IBM devices when the problem is related to IBM Storage Protect

For hardware issues, the appropriate device vendors should be engaged for assistance.

Note: It is recommended that the customer open a ticket with the hardware vendor first, before contacting IBM Storage Protect Support. This way, in cases where the problem is determined to be related to an IBM component (LTO tape drive or IBM tape device driver), the hardware library vendor will already have support contacts within the IBM Tape organization.

For IBM Virtual Tape Library (VTL) issues, support will be handled by the appropriate IBM VTL Support team.

Device Support Qualification Request

For IBM Storage Protect device support qualification request of your company's tape library, tape drive or VTL, please email your request to ddsupport@ibm.com.  In the email, please include your contact information, company name, and a description of the tape/VTL device.

Legend for Table

  • For IBM Storage Protect version 5.4 and later, to use a library with greater than 4 drives or greater than 48 storage slots, IBM Storage Protect Extended Edition is required.
  • The platform fields (AIX®, HP-UX, Solaris, and Windows®) identify the IBM Storage Protect server platforms and minimum fix level required to support the device. When either a unique level is specified such as 5.5.1 or base level is specified, it indicates that support for that device exists starting at that level and for all follow on levels or releases.

Library Sharing :

IBM Storage Protect supports sharing a library between multiple servers. The following environments are supported:

  • all SCSI type tape libraries
  • AIX, Windows, SOLARIS, HP-UX, and Linux servers
  • 349X Controlled libraries
  • Sun StorageTek ACSLS and LibraryStation controlled libraries
  • Sun StorageTek ACSLS controlled libraries via External Library Manager function with Clareti Enterprise DistribuTape™
  • IBM Integrated Removable Media Manager (IRMM) controlled libraries via IBM Storage Protect External Library Manager

The following environments are not presently supported:

  • all optical and DVD libraries

LAN-Free Client Data Transfer

IBM Storage Protect LAN-Free Client Data Transfer is now available for selected servers and clients.

Notes:

  • IBM Storage Protect for Windows Server supports removable media devices such as Iomega JAZ, Iomega ZIP, CD-R, CD-RW, and optical devices provided a file system is supplied on the media. The devices are defined using a device class of device type REMOVABLEFILE.

Other Devices Supported

  • Direct Access Storage Device Support
    A list of supported storage devices is not available. Review the requirements for disk devices in the IBM Storage Protect information center and compare them with information from the disk system vendor. See the Information Center for your version of IBM Storage Protect and search on "Requirements for disk subsystems.

  • Network Attached Storage (NAS) Device Support

    IBM Storage Protect supports backing up and restoring data on NAS devices using the Network Data Management Protocol (NDMP). NAS devices supported for NDMP backup are listed above in the Network Attached Storage Device section.

    IBM Storage Protect also supports NAS devices as storage pool devices. The NAS devices must adhere to the characteristics for disk devices as documented in the Requirements for Disk Subsystems section in the IBM Storage Protect Administrator's Guide.

  • SAN and Fibre Channel Device Support and Interoperability
    IBM Storage Protect supports a wide array of Fibre channel devices. Visit IBM Storage Protect SAN Interoperability for the interoperability information.
