API Connect Upgrade Central: v10 currency

News

Abstract

This API Connect: Upgrade Central page provides a summary for upgrading v10 for currency.  It is important to periodically apply updates as part of a healthy product maintenance process throughout your project's lifecycle.  Currency provides security updates, defect fixes and depending on the release stream you've chosen, innovation that provides you more value.  This page describes the choices you have in release streams, supported paths to keep moving forward, with links to resources.

Content

v10-track 0
You have choice:  v10.0 includes two active release streams
  •  10.0.x - The latest is 10.0.2.  Innovation, feature enhancements, security updates and defect fixes are delivered regularly (typically quarterly) in update packages delivered that use V.R.M numbering format.
  • 10.0.1.x is designated as a Long-Term Support Release update package.  This provides periodic rollup of security patches and defect fixes in fix packs that use V.R.M.F numbering format. The supported duration will be a minimum of 12 months from December 2020.  If coming from v2018, you must first move to this release stream, then move forward as you choose.
  • Considerations: 10.0.1.x is intended to be a stream where no features are delivered.  Staying on v10.0.1.x will enable you to upgrade using fix packs with less change but at the cost of not receiving newer features or enhancements to existing features.  This may suit customers not seeking enhancements or additional innovation.  Whether you are on the 10.0.1.x or 10.0.2+ you must move to the latest fix pack or latest two continuous delivery packages to receive a fix.

arrow to right
Upgrade to new fix packs on 10.0.1.x, moving from left to right (Row 2)
For example, 10.0.1.1 to 10.0.1.2.  Upgrading to a newer fix pack is intended to be performed as an upgrade, the act of applying software updates in-place, on its existing infrastructure.  Upgrades may first require prerequisites to be updated. Examples include OpenShift or K8s versions, or updates to existing VMware virtual appliances (OVAs).
Note:  There is one unique case only with VMware virtual appliances introduced in 10.0.1.2 and 10.0.2. Virtual appliances before 10.0.1.2 and 10.0.2 cannot be upgraded due to required upgrades to the appliance operating system.  It is highly recommended to begin using 10.0.1.2 or 10.0.2 which avoids the need to migrate to new virtual appliances later.

Upgrade to newer 10.0.x continuous delivery packages, moving left to right (Row 3)
For example, 10.0.2 to 10.0.3.  Upgrading to newer 10.0.x levels is intended to be performed as an upgrade, the act of applying software updates in-place, on its existing infrastructure.  Upgrades may first require prerequisites to be updated. Examples include OpenShift or K8s versions.

Upgrade from 10.0.1.x to a newer 10.0.x, moving between release streams in a downward motion in the image above
There is a 1:1 relationship between a 10.0.1.x fix pack and a 10.0.x release as described in the image above. For example, you can only move from 10.0.1.2 to 10.0.2.  A future example would be 10.0.1.4 to 10.0.4.
Relationship between API Gateway and Manager Subsystems
API Gateways, when deployed on VMware OVAs or physical DataPower appliances, require an upgrade to the appliance firmware.  Versioning compatibility and upgrade documentation steps are provided from v2018 to v10 for DataPower Gateway Virtual Edition.  This does not apply when API Connect and API Gateways are deployed on OpenShift 4 or other Kubernetes platforms.  In those cases, the API Connect Kubernetes Operator will upgrade the containerized API Gateway Service directly.
