IBM API Connect Support Lifecycle Policy

News

Abstract

This document explains the support model IBM API Connect follows and provides a summary about each product version in market at the time of publication.

Content

IBM API Connect follows the IBM Continuous Delivery (CD) support model to deliver new capabilities to meet market demand, unless otherwise denoted in this article. It is highly recommended to read the following articles to learn about the details.

CD Support Lifecycle Policy: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/718163

CD FAQ: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/718161

The IBM CD support lifecycle policy provides a continuous delivery release stream, where new functionality, security updates and defect fixes are provided.  These are called Continuous Delivery Update Packages.  Optionally, the policy allows for some CD update packages to be designated as Long Term Support Release (LTSR) update packages.  Not all products provide these.  API Connect does provide a Long Term Support option for each version in market at the time of publication.

Support and Fixes: [Verbatim from the CD Policy FAQ] “Clients can contact IBM technical support for product technical assistance for as long as the product Version/Release has not yet reached End of Support (EOS).  This support assistance is available for at least two years for all CD update packages for a product release.  However, defects and security updates will only be provided on the latest two CD update packages” along with currently supported Long Term Support Releases. By default, defect fixes are delivered in the next CD update package and next LTSR fix pack.

The IBM Software Product Compatibility Reports should be referenced to identify the latest list of CD Update Packages and supported Long Term Support Releases, as well as system requirements.

Versions in market

IBM API Connect has two versions in market: V10.0.x (latest), V2018.x (end of support April 30, 2023 - no extended support option)

IBM API Connect V10.0.x

API Connect V10 is the latest product release stream.  New functionality, security updates and defect fixes are delivered in update packages.  V10 uses the V.R.M.F format for product numbering described here.

For lifecycle dates, see: Software lifecycle page for IBM API Connect 10.0.x.  API Connect V10.0 intends to support at least 3+1 years from general availability.  For clarity this statement is for V.R, 10.0 & is irrespective of third digit modifications or LTS classification or not.  It is noted the IBM CD support lifecycle policy only requires a minimum of 2 years + 1 year extension (2+1).

V10.0.5 is designated as Long Term Support (LTS).  At announcement a 2 year duration of support from general availability was listed, with an expected EOS date of June 30, 2024 for this LTS.

V10.0.1 is designated as Long Term Support (LTS), in market since 2020 has announced end of support (EOS) for September 30, 2023, providing a 12-month notice and achieving an expected life of 3 years for this LTS, much longer than the minimum support duration of one year per the IBM CD support lifecycle policy.  No extended support will be offered on LTS. Upgrade to a later 10.0.x must be performed.

Both V10.0.5 & V10.0.1 LTS provide on-going maintenance at periodic intervals, using fix packs following V.R.M.F numbering.  Where "F" is the fix pack.  Security updates, defect fixes, features/enhancements & currency of 3rd party packages are provided in fix packs.  Fix packs are published on Fix Central.

Long term support (LTS) update packages do not offer extended support once they reach EOS.  Upgrading to a newer V10.0 update package, LTS or CD, is required to remain in a supported configuration.  Long Term Support update packages are not meant to be supported for the duration of the V.R release, only a subset of the release lifecycle allowing clients to move less frequently than every CD package.

For the full list of CD and LTS packages: See the Software Product Compatibility Reports.

IBM API Connect V2018.x

API Connect V2018 has announced end of support (EOS) for April 30, 2023.  No extended support will be offered for purchase, instead a 23 month notice of EOS was provided for planning.   With V10.0 in market since 2020, it is highly discouraged to continue deploying V2018.x.  V2018 follows a date-based format (Year.Quarter.Release.Fixpack) for product numbering.

V2018.4.1 is the last update package and designated as a Long Term Support (LTS) Release.  Only the latest level receives defect fixes and security updates, through on-going maintenance, at periodic intervals, using fix packs V2018.4.1.x numbering. No features will be allowed in this release.   Beyond security updates and defect fixes it is possible that on-going currency of 3rd party code, such as open source, may require to be updated.  Fix packs are published on Fix Central.

V10 is recommended for all new deployments and upgrades.

Versions removed from market

IBM API Connect V5.0.x

API Connect V5 is End of Support (EOS) after April 30, 2022.  Support Extensions are available for purchase through December 31, 2022. While the support extension is less than a typical 12 month period, a longer initial notification of 18 months from EOS was provided for planning.  Contact your account rep to request a support extension quote.

V5.0.8 is the last update package and designated as a Long Term Support Release (LTSR).  This release out of support, no new fix packs will be provided.  Existing fix packs are published on Fix Central.   Note that IBM will not support issues related to Debian 7 on which earlier V5.0.x versions are built.
