Error description
WASPreUpgrade.sh and WASPostUpgrade.sh exit with return code '0' even if failure occurs in migration code. Need the return codes to honor exactly what failure returned from the migration main java class. In the WAS PreUpgrade logs you can see the following messages: ■exec MIGR0300I: The migration function is starting to save the existing WebSphere Application Server environment. ■exec MIGR0302I: The existing files are being saved. ■exec null ■exec MIGR0272E: The migration function cannot complete the command. ■echo ${error} Target finished: was-pre-upgrade Mon Sep 29 04:05:20 CDT 2008 Target finished: was-pre-upgrade Mon Sep 29 04:05:20 CDT 2008 For the CRPROF JCL step you can find errors similar to this: INSTCONFFAILED: The profile could not be created. et cetera... BUT, the CRPROF step will have RC=0000 and COND CODE 0000 This RC=0000 the allows migration processing to continue past CRPROF, when it should instead stop processing at that time.

Problem summary
**************************************************************** * USERS AFFECTED: All users of IBM WebSphere Application * * Server V7.0 on z/OS using the Migration * * tooling. * **************************************************************** * PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: Return codes not being recorded and * * registering a failure during migration. * **************************************************************** * RECOMMENDATION: * **************************************************************** Migration may fail during profile creation on z/OS, then proceed to run WASPreUpgrade and WASPostUpgrade. WASPreUpgrade will succeed, but WASPostUpgrade will fail.
Problem conclusion
The script has been updated to catch the return code from the profile creation step and register the failure and not proceed to the WASPreUpgrade and WASPostUpgrade steps. APAR PM06217 is currently targeted for inclusion in Service Level (Fix Pack) 7.0.0.11 of WebSphere Application Server V7.0.
