Software Instances page

You can use the Software Instances page in the Software Management task to create and manage your software inventory, to generate reports about your software, and to identify the products, features, FMIDs, and data sets that are included in your software instances.

To display the Software Instances page, click Software Instances on the Software Management page or select Software Instances from the Switch To menu provided on the Deployments page and the Products page. For more information about software instances, see help topic Defining your software to z/OSMF.

The Software Instances table lists the software instances that are defined to z/OSMF. For a description of the columns or actions, see Columns in the Software Instances table or Actions for software instances.

To define a new software instance, complete the steps provided in help topic Adding software instances.

Columns in the Software Instances table

Column Description
Name Name of the software instance. If you click the name link, the View Software Instance page is displayed.
System z/OSMF host system that has access to the volumes and data sets where the software instance resides. For more information about systems, see help topic Defining your systems to z/OSMF.
Messages Indicator of whether a message has occurred for the software instance. If a message occurred, one of the following indicators is displayed:
  • Message ID. A single message exists. The ID of that message is displayed.
  • If multiple messages exist, one of the following is displayed:
    • Information icon Information. Information messages exist.
    • Warning icon Warning. Warning messages exist. Information messages might also exist.
    • Error icon Error. Error messages exist. Information and warning messages might also exist.

To display the messages, click the link or status icon. If a message ID is displayed, you can also view the message by hovering over the message ID link.

Description Description of the software instance.
Activity State of the software instance. One of the following values is displayed:
  • Blank. The software instance is not being modified or deployed.
  • Being deployed. The software instance is locked because it is either being deployed or replaced in a deployment that is in progress. You cannot modify or remove the software instance, and you cannot use another deployment to replace it. If the software instance is being replaced in an active deployment, you also cannot deploy the software instance.

    To complete these actions, wait until the current deployment is completed or cancel it. To display the message for the activity, click the lock icon or link.

  • Being modified. The software instance is locked because it is being modified by another user. You cannot modify, remove, or deploy the software instance, and you cannot use another deployment to replace it.

    To view the user ID of the user who is modifying the software instance and the date and time the user started modifying it, click the lock icon or the link. To obtain the lock for the software instance, complete the steps provided in help topic Locking objects in z/OSMF.

  • Being exported. The software instance is locked because it is being exported by another user. You cannot modify, remove, or deploy the software instance, and you cannot use another deployment to replace it.

    Once the jobs have been run and the portable copy of the software instance has been created, the export operation is complete.

Global Zone CSI CSI data set that contains the global zone used to manage the software.
Target Zones Target zones in the specified global zone that describe the software.
Categories Categories to which the software instance is assigned.
Product, Feature, and FMID Information Retrieved Date and time the product, feature, and FMID information was last retrieved for the software instance. This field is blank if this information has not been retrieved. Otherwise, the date it was last retrieved is provided.

If the product, feature, and FMID information has not been retrieved recently, the information stored in z/OSMF might be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect.

To retrieve this information, complete the steps provided in help topic Retrieving product information from SMP/E global and target zones.

Last Modified Date and time the software instance was last modified.
Modified By User ID of the user who last modified the software instance.
Created Date and time the software instance was created.
Created By User ID of the user who created the software instance.
Locked Date and time the software instance was locked. This column is blank if the software instance is not currently locked.
Locked by User ID of the user who locked the software instance. This column is blank if the software instance is not currently locked.

Actions for software instances

The actions are described in the following tables:

  • Targeted actions. Actions that apply to the selected software instances. To use a targeted action, select one or more software instances.
  • General actions. Actions that apply to software instances. No selection is required.
  • Table actions. Actions that apply to the entire table. No selection is required.
Table 2. Targeted actions
Action Description
View View information related to the selected software instance or portable software instance. Select one of the following items:
  • Properties. View the properties of a software instance. The properties include, but are not limited to, the global zone, target zones, and any additional data sets associated with the instance. To enable this option, select only one software instance.
  • Products, Features, and FMIDs. View information about the products, features, and FMIDs included in the software instance. To enable this option, select one or more software instances.
  • Data Sets. View a list of the data sets included in the software instance. To enable this option, select only one software instance.
Modify Modify the selected software instance. To enable this action, select only one software instance.
Copy Create a copy of the selected software instance. To enable this action, select only one software instance.
Open Deployments Deploy the selected software instance, and manage its deployments. To enable this action, select only one software instance.
Export the selected software instance. Export the selected software instance. To enable this action, select only one software instance.
Remove Remove the selected software instances. To enable this action, select one or more software instances.
Retrieve Product, Feature, and FMID Information Search the global zone and target zones associated with the selected software instance to obtain information about its products, features, and FMIDs. To enable this action, select only one software instance. This action is enabled only if the software instance has a global zone.

When one or more non SMP/E managed software instance is selected this action is disabled.

Maintenance Reports Generate reports about the selected software instance. The Maintenance Reports submenu lists the reports you can generate. Select one of the reports to proceed.

To enable the Software Instance Validation and Software Instance Comparison reports, select only one software instance. For all other reports, you can select multiple software instances.

When one or more non SMP/E managed software instance is selected all actions are disabled except Software Instance Validation.

Action Description
Add Add a new software instance.
Show Hidden Maintenance Reports Re-display the maintenance reports that were generated and hidden during the current z/OSMF session. This action is enabled only when maintenance reports are available to be displayed.

Action Description
Select All Select all of the rows in the table.
Deselect All Deselect all of the selected rows in the table.
Configure Columns Select the columns to display in the table, specify the order of those columns, and designate which columns should be fixed in position when the table is scrolled horizontally.
Hide Filter Row Remove the filter row from view. This action is listed only when the filter row is displayed in the table.
Show Filter Row Display the filter row. This action is listed only when the filter row is not displayed in the table.
Clear Sorts Clear the sort from all of the columns in the table. This action is disabled if no sorting is specified in the table.
Export Table Data Select one of the following options:
  • Current View: Export only the rows and columns that are currently included in the table.
  • All Data: Export all the rows and columns that are available for the table.
Print Table Data Select one of the following options:
  • Current View: Print only the rows and columns that are currently included in the table.
  • All Data: Print all the rows and columns that are available for the table.
