View Data Sets page

You can use the View Data Sets page in the Software Management task to identify all the data sets included in the software instance. You can use this information to determine what will be deployed during a deployment, to identify which data sets will be affected if a product is updated or removed, and to determine whether the data sets conform to your installation's policies for naming conventions, placements, and so on.

Overview

The data sets included in the software instance are divided into three groups – SMP/E managed data sets, SMP/E managed UNIX file system data sets, and non-SMP/E managed data sets. For a non SMP/E managed software instance, you are taken straight to the Non-SMP/E Managed Data sets tab and the other two tabs will always be disabled. An SMP/E managed data set is one of the following types of data sets:
  • A CSI data set that contains the global zone, target zones, or related distribution zones included in the software instance.
  • A data set that is described by DDDEF entries defined in the target zones and related distribution zones and satisfies at least one of the following criteria:
    • In a target zone, the DDNAME for the data set is the SYSLIB subentry for an element (MAC, PNL, HFS, etc) or is the SYSLIB or SIDEDECKLIB subentry for an LMOD entry.
    • In a related distribution zone, the DDNAME for the data set is the DISTLIB subentry for an element (MOD, MAC, PNL, HFS, etc). A distribution zone and the distribution libraries managed by that zone are considered part of the software instance only if the distribution zone name is the RELATED subentry for one or more target zones in the instance.

If the software instance was created as the result of a deployment where the distribution zones and libraries were not copied, the target zones will not have a RELATED subentry. In this case, no distribution zones or distribution libraries will be listed on the View Data Sets page because they are not included in the software instance.

    • The data set is an SMP/E control data set. For example, SMPDATA1, SMPDATA2, SMPLOG, SMPLOGA, SMPLTS, SMPMTS, SMPSTS, SMPPTS, SMPSCDS, or SMPPARM.

z/OSMF lists these data sets on the SMP/E Managed Data Sets tab and the SMP/E Managed UNIX Data Sets tab.

A non-SMP/E managed data set is a data set included in the software instance that does not meet the SMP/E managed data set criteria. These data sets are explicitly added to the software instance by a user. z/OSMF lists these data sets on the Non-SMP/E Managed Data Sets tab.

If data sets are not listed that you expected to be included in the software instance, modify the software instance and add the appropriate target zones or non-SMP/E managed data sets. To modify the software instance, complete the steps provided in help topic Modifying the properties of software instances.

The items displayed on the View Data Sets page and the actions listed in the Actions menus are described in the following sections:

Field on the View Data Sets page

Table 1. Field on the View Data Sets page
Field Description
Selected software instance Name of the selected software instance, and the name of the z/OSMF host system that has access to the volumes and data sets where the software instance resides.

Columns in the SMP/E and Non-SMP/E Managed Data Sets tables

Table 2. Columns in the SMP/E and Non-SMP/E Managed Data Sets tables
Column Description
Data Set Name Name of the data set. This column is displayed only on the SMP/E Managed Data Sets tab and the Non-SMP/E Managed Data Sets tab.
Data Set Name / UNIX Directory Identifier for the data set or UNIX directory. The tree has the following structure:
  • Data Set Name. Name of the UNIX file system data set.
    • UNIX Directory. List of the UNIX directories contained in the data set. If z/OSMF could not identify the UNIX file system data set for any UNIX directories, those directories are nested under a node labeled No Data Set Found. Typically, this occurs when the UNIX file system data set is not mounted.

This column is displayed only on the SMP/E Managed UNIX Data Sets tab.

Messages Indicator of whether a message has occurred for the data set. If a message occurred, one of the following indicators is displayed:
  • Message ID. A single message exists. The ID of that message is displayed.
  • If multiple messages exist, one of the following is displayed:
    • Information icon Information. Information messages exist.
    • Warning icon Warning. Warning messages exist. Information messages might also exist.
    • Error icon Error. Error messages exist. Information and warning messages might also exist.

To display the messages, click the link or status icon. If a message ID is displayed, you can also view the message by hovering over the message ID link.

Zone Names SMP/E zones that contain a DDDEF entry for the data set. This column is available only in the SMP/E Managed Data Sets table and the SMP/E Managed UNIX Data Sets table.
Volumes Volume on which the data set resides. Multiple volume serials are provided if the data set spans multiple volumes.
Data Set Type Type of data set. The data set can be one of the following types:
  • HFS. Hierarchical file system.
  • PDS. Partitioned data set.
  • PDSE. Partitioned data set extended.
  • Sequential. Sequential data set.
  • VSAM. VSAM data set.
  • ZFS. zSeries file system.
RECFM Record format specified when the data set was allocated. The record format can be any valid combination of the following codes:
  • A. ASA printer control characters.
  • B. Blocked records.
  • F. Fixed-length records.
  • M. Machine code printer control characters.
  • S. Standard (for F) or spanned (for V); used only with sequential data sets.
  • T. Track-overflow feature.
  • U. Undefined format records.
  • V. Variable-length records.
LRECL Logical record length, in bytes, specified when the data set was allocated.
BLKSIZE Block size, in bytes, specified when the data set was allocated.
Tracks Number of tracks allocated to the data set.
% Used Percentage of allocated tracks used, expressed in whole numbers, not rounded. If any track is used, the minimum percentage is 1. If the data set is a PDSE, the percentage refers to the percentage of allocated pages used.
Extents Number of extents allocated to the data set.
