Grappling with data
Opting out of the data economy isn’t an option for businesses today. Learning how to utilize, secure and store escalating amounts of structured and unstructured data should be top of every company’s agenda.
For Herman IT, recognizing the challenges faced by clients and prospects, then designing services that address them, has long proved a successful strategy. The organization soon identified a common pain point for its customers.
Kari Maikkola, Sales Director at Herman IT, explains: “Companies want to be free to harness new technologies such as AI, deep learning, big data, cloud-native applications and more. But often, they’re already struggling with data, even before they kick off truly data-intensive initiatives such as these.”
To remove barriers to innovation, enterprises need to ensure that they can get their hands on data when they need it, and that they have protections in place to prevent data loss or misuse. As data regulations tighten up, companies are also subject to rules that mean they must retain data for years at a time. And of course, budgets are always limited, so organizations must fulfil all these goals without allowing costs to spiral out of control. Herman IT set out to design an IT service offering that delivered on all these aims.
Finding the secret sauce
Herman IT left no stone unturned in seeking the right technology to support its latest offering, which led the company to consider object storage. Veli-Antti Leinonen, Sales Manager at Herman IT, says: “To us, object storage promises huge scalability, faster data retrieval, easier management and high efficiency. However, in the past, we found that the object storage systems on offer required a large upfront investment in capacity, which wouldn’t suit a lot of our customers.
“We took another look at the marketplace and found that IBM Cloud Object Storage out-performed other offerings on scalability, cost-effectiveness and availability, and that we could start small and extend the system as clients needed. Once we’d read the persuasive references and analyst evaluations, we were convinced it was the right option for us.”
Herman IT decided to build a new data backup and archive service based on IBM Cloud Object Storage technology. Depending on their budget, customers can choose between deployment at a single site or geo-dispersal across three sites in Finland.
IBM Cloud Object Storage is well-suited to the data archiving use case because it provides a cost-effective, permanently available and highly secure foundation. Equally, it enables Herman IT to simplify backups for customers by integrating directly with most major backup software providers and streamlining operations. Customers have the option to either replace or augment tape backup.
Taking the first steps
Herman IT launched its new offering with a global healthcare organization, deploying IBM Cloud Object Storage capacity across three sites. Olli Anttonen, System Architect at Herman IT, recalls: “An IBM consultant spent three days with us helping to ensure that we achieved a smooth implementation. Using IBM Cloud Object Storage, we provide a seamless single point of access to data, enabling secure access to data for multiple users from any location.
“The global healthcare client migrated their medical images repository to our new storage platform. Now, new medical images spend 24 hours on IBM Spectrum Scale file system in our data center, which is when they are viewed and shared the most. After this period, they’re transferred to Herman IT and an IBM Cloud Object Storage repository, where they can still be accessed reliably but are stored at significantly lower cost.”
Driving success across industries
Using IBM Cloud Object Storage, Herman IT was able to propose a solution for its global healthcare client at half the cost of an equivalently sized block storage system. Beyond this compelling business case, the healthcare provider can now equip care-givers with the information they need to diagnose and treat patients effectively.
This is just the beginning, with Herman IT anticipating demand for its new data archive and backup service across multiple industries. With IBM Cloud Object Storage solutions, Herman IT’s clients can choose to start small and scale up extremely fast as they explore new data-intensive workloads or address rising demand. With cost-effective storage resources on tap, the only question for Herman IT’s customers is: “where do we want to take our business next?”
Leinonen summarizes: “As people become more familiar with the object storage concept, we expect interest in our new offering to rise, helping us grow our foothold in the market.”
Making a mark in the crowded IT services market
By developing a data backup and archive service based on IBM Cloud Object Storage technology, Herman IT is capturing new market share.
Leinonen explains: “Data represents competitive advantage for many companies, but also a major cost and source of risk. Our new data backup and archive service uses IBM Cloud Object Storage to enable fast, secure, reliable access to data. At the same time, it offers a relatively low-cost alternative to traditional block and file storage solutions. Users can store fast-growing data without breaking the bank, helping them to comply with retention policies.”
He concludes: “We’re demonstrating how IBM Cloud Object Storage can keep data “warm” – that is, ready to access – while offering low storage costs, virtually unlimited scalability and non-stop availability. These are the drivers behind a successful business in today’s data-centric world.”
