The data foundation that changed everything

EBank became Egypt's first data governance pioneer—and built the data platform every bank in the region will need.

Growing fast on data no one fully trusted

EBank (Export Development Bank of Egypt) has financed Egypt’s international trade ambitions for decades. As the bank expanded into retail banking and prepared to build a modern data warehouse, its leaders faced a challenge common to many established institutions: years of data accumulated across distributed systems—such as Core Banking System, Card Management System, CRM, and others. This created a need for a more unified and holistic view of EBank’s data assets, with greater visibility into the data available across EBank’s systems, where it was located, and its definitions, relationships, lineage, and quality.

EBank had watched other banks in the region jump straight into data warehousing and analytics, and struggle. Recognizing that sustainable analytics requires more than infrastructure, EBank’s leadership understood that a strong data governance foundation—one fully aligned with the bank’s broader data strategy, was the essential first step. Without it, data quality, trust, and access would remain unresolved problems that no downstream investment could fix.

By establishing systematic data quality and governance capabilities, the bank enhanced its ability to assess and monitor data completeness, consistency, and accuracy across its systems. Existing data protection and masking controls were further supported by governance capabilities that provide greater visibility and assurance over the application of these controls when data is shared.

Data governance is a strategic enabler of our transformation journey. By creating a trusted and unified foundation, we are strengthening informed decision-making and preparing EBank to capture greater value from data across the organization.

One platform, one governed view of the bank's data

After a thorough evaluation of available platforms, EBank selected IBM as its data governance foundation. Partnering with MegaSoft, a leading IBM Business Partner with deep expertise in data solutions across Egypt and the wider region, the bank had the right team in place to move fast and implement with confidence.

MegaSoft implemented IBM® watsonx.data® integration (formerly IBM DataStage®) for data pipelines and real-time integration, and IBM watsonx.data intelligence (formerly IBM Knowledge Catalog™ and MANTA™) for mapped data privacy rules and end-to-end data lineage. In line with applicable regulatory requirements and EBank’s security and technology policies, the solution was deployed on-premises, helping the bank maintain its data within its secure environment.

The deployment was completed in a short three to four months. An additional platform capability enabled EBank to validate sensitive data against defined masking rules, proactively identifying unmasked data and providing assurance that all sensitive data elements were comprehensively covered.

With the platform in place, EBank implemented a structured, multi-layered approach to data quality, replacing ad hoc manual checks with automated, continuously monitored rules. Per-source profiling validated completeness, accuracy, and consistency at the column level, flagging null values, duplicates, and anomalies for data steward review. Cross-column validations compared related fields within the same system, while cross-system rules surfaced mismatches in key attributes across multiple platforms. For migration and new projects, the same framework ensured data completeness before go-live.

These checks gave the Data Governance team a much deeper understanding of how each system processes and stores data, surfacing critical dependencies and enabling the team to recommend preventive controls and input validations directly within source systems, reducing the likelihood of recurring issues and strengthening data quality at the point of capture.

EBank has initiated the development of its Data Catalog and business glossary, strengthening the bank’s governed and unified view of its data assets. This improved data visibility enables EBank to better understand and access trusted, consistent data, supporting more informed decision-making and improved data management.

EBank also formed a Data Governance Committee headed by the CEO—elevating data quality from an IT initiative to a strategic organizational priority.

From data quality concerns to governed data, bank-wide

The assessment provided an evidence-based view of data quality and consistency across the organization. This greater visibility enables senior management to make informed decisions and prioritize appropriate data remediation and cleansing actions.

Sensitive data was systematically validated to detect any unmasked information, ensuring comprehensive coverage and strengthening confidence in EBank’s data protection controls.

Cross-system comparisons and data consistency assessments identified discrepancies that could impact the accuracy and effectiveness of EBank data processing and decision-making.

The data governance solution plays an important role in supporting data migration activities by ensuring data consistency and completeness throughout the migration process. Applying appropriate validation controls and specific data identifiers helps reduce migration risks, improve data completeness, and support a smoother transition to the target environment.

EBank is now the first bank in Egypt to implement IBM’s data governance capabilities at this scale. The platform gives the bank a trusted, governed view of its data, the kind of foundation that makes everything that comes next possible. On the roadmap: an enterprise data warehouse, customer segmentation, and Customer 360 analytics.

The data is trusted. The platform is ready. And the rest of the industry is still catching up.
