Delfi manufactures, markets and distributes own brand and third-party branded chocolate confectionery products in Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore and Malaysia. Additionally, its products are sold in over 10 other countries.

Delfi management wanted an automated, integrated and self-service reporting solution that is able to provide visibility into numbers for business users in Sales,  and Operations across all countries.

Decision-makers in Delfi have heightened levels of expectations when it comes to the data that fuels their most important decisions. At the same time, data quality and latency issues are a concern for Delfi. It had implemented SAP S/4HANA in 2016 for core ERP processes. However, dealer management, advertising and promotions, and budgeting processes were running on bespoke systems. This resulted in data being spread across multiple applications.

Commercial and management reporting was done offline on a regular basis. This was predominantly a tedious, manual exercise. Part of the data resided in SAP S/4HANA while other information was stored in a separate application . This obviously led to challenges around getting complete visibility of the operations.

Today’s most impactful analysis depend on data from a variety of sources and applications. Delfi wanted to reduce the amount of time it took for finding and gathering data, enabling more time for analysis. Once it had captured the right data from a variety of sources, it wanted to provide that information to its decision-makers so that key insights could impact their decisions.

Incorporating data lake into their data management strategy

As a part of the Delfi BI Data Lake project, IBM has built a Data Lake, BI & Analytics solution on AWS. BI Data Lake brings together a comprehensive view of data for effective and efficient decision-making.

Technical solution involves bringing data from SAP systems and other application systems into Amazon Redshift and building analytical dashboards and reports on Tableau. The data gathered from different sources in various formats is then unified, deployed and integrated. This entire process helps in analysing massive volumes of structured and semi-structured data.

There are different data sources. As a part of the Data Lake solution, source files are transferred from several different avenues. Amazon Redshift insight area contains data ready to be consumed by users for reporting or analysis. The highly scalable environment can support extremely large data volumes and accept data in its native format from a wide variety of sources.

Tableau reporting is now done by accessing the data in Amazon Redshift directly. Multiple analytical dashboards have been created for management insights: 

  • Sales dashboards have regional sales, product sales analysis.
  • Finance dashboards have balance sheet, income statement, operating income and expense reports.

Delfi IT teams’ energy was essential in making the Data Lake project successful. It was heartening to see business users showcase insights by drilling down in analytical dashboards

Drive smarter, data-driven decisions by capitalising on variety of data

User-defined access has allowed Delfi to work with data from multiple sources across the organisation, either on-premises or cloud. Delfi’s decision-making has improved with data drawn from more sources because it has increased the depth of insights . Less than 20 analytical dashboards developed, replacing 100+ manual reports. 

There is enhanced agility for business users with self-service reporting that is enabled with ad hoc queries and near real-time analysis, which also eliminates the time and costs involved with IT assistance.

Overall, IBM’s solution has  helped make better decisions.  More than 25% reduction in manual efforts in managing and preparing reports. Previously preparing reports would take several days but with the IBM Services Datalake solution internal reports were published in less than 1 day. Data authenticity is taken care of with proper data governance that helps eliminate quality issues
