Data Space architecture highlights
Data Space architecture includes the following concepts:
Data Spaces are simplifications of real volumes. They represent a group of homogenous volumes that have the same configuration.
You can imagine a Data Space as a group of volumes that belong to the same application, have the same attributes, and share the same workload.
How Data Spaces relate to pools:
 – A Data Space is assigned to a specific pool.
 
Note: You can configure identical Data Spaces for a pair of pools simultaneously by using the Balanced pools option. See “Example: Adding a Data Space to pools”.
 – Multiple Data Spaces can be defined for each pool.
 – Currently, only one Data Space of a pool can be assigned to a workload. Developers are preparing several components that will allow Storage Modeller to overcome this limitation.
Each Data Space carries key characteristics, such as the following attributes:
 – Volume Type (Open Systems, IBM i, or IBM Z)
 – Allocation Type (Fully Allocated, or Data Reduced)
 – Data Reduction percentages for the data contained in the volumes
 – Replication specs (None, Metro-Mirror, Global-Mirror)
 – Provisioned capacity, number of volumes, etc.
