System Firmware Update or Upgrade Failed On HMC Managed Systems

Troubleshooting


Problem

This document goes over initial troubleshooting and data to collect, if you are updating or upgrading system firmware on your Power System and is HMC managed.

Diagnosing The Problem

Check the following steps and perform the actions in the steps and reattempt the firmware update or upgrade before opening up a support ticket.
  1. Verify that the HMC is at the same level you are trying to go to.
    Example: If your system is at ML1030 and you want to upgrade to ML1050, you need to have your HMC at V10R31050 or your system will not perform the firmware upgrade.

  2. Make sure your FSPs are connected to your HMC that you are trying to perform the upgrade or update from.
    To verify the connections on your HMC:
     - Select your system
     - Go To Connections and Operations
     - Select Service Processor Status to view if your FSPs or BMCs are connected to the HMC:

  3. Check that the Firmware is ready to update or upgrade.
     - On your HMC select the system that you are performing the update or upgrade
     - Select Firmware -> Check Readiness
     - A new window pops up, showing if you are ready to perform a firmware update or upgrade.
    If your status is Ready, then you are good to perform the update or upgrade.

If none of the steps helped you debug your firmware update or upgrade failure in order to successfully perform the operation, open up a case with support and collect the following data:
