Some 10GbE/40GbE RoCE adapters will not configure on recent levels of AIX and VIOS. See the details below for a list of affected levels and adapters
Abstract
Some 10GbE/40GbE RoCE adapters do not configure
Description
Some 10GbE/40GbE RoCE adapters will not configure on the following levels of AIX and VIOS:
AIX 7200-05-08
AIX 7300-02-02
VIOS 3.1.4.40/3.1.4.41
VIOS 4.1.0.20/4.1.0.21
The device driver cannot be loaded and the devices will remain unusable in a "defined" state, resulting in loss of network connectivity to the LPAR. For a VIOS LPAR, this can affect client LPARs with virtualized connections that use this adapter as well.
The following adapters are affected (feature code followed by description):
EC27 PCIe2 2-Port 10GbE RoCE SFP+ Adapter LP
EC28 PCIe2 2-Port 10GbE RoCE SFP+ Adapter
EC29 PCIe2 2-Port 10GbE RoCE SR Adapter LP
EC30 PCIe2 2-Port 10GbE RoCE SR Adapter
EC28 PCIe2 2-Port 10GbE RoCE SFP+ Adapter
EC29 PCIe2 2-Port 10GbE RoCE SR Adapter LP
EC30 PCIe2 2-Port 10GbE RoCE SR Adapter
EC37 2-PORT 10GbE EN/RoCE PCIe 3.0 LP X8 ADAPTER
EL3X 2-PORT 10GbE EN/RoCE PCIe 3.0 LP X8 ADAPTER
EC38 2-PORT 10GbE EN/RoCE PCIe 3.0 LP CAPABLE X8 ADAPTER
EC2M 2-PORT 10GbE EN/RoCE PCIe 3.0 LP X8 ADAPTER W/OPTICS
EL40 2-PORT 10GbE EN/RoCE PCIe 3.0 LP X8 ADAPTER W/OPTICS
EC2N 2-PORT 10GbE EN/RoCE PCIe 3.0 LP CAPABLE X8 ADAPTER W/OPTICS

EC2N 2-PORT 10GbE EN/RoCE PCIe 3.0 LP CAPABLE X8 ADAPTER W/OPTICS
EC3A 2-PORT 40GbE RoCE SFP+ PCIe 3.0 LP ADAPTER
EC3B 2-PORT 40GbE RoCE SFP+ PCIe 3.0 LP CAPABLE
EC3B 2-PORT 40GbE RoCE SFP+ PCIe 3.0 LP CAPABLE
EL27 (RP #EC27) 2-PORT 10GbE RoCE SFP+ LP ADAPTER
Use "How to determine Feature Code" to help determine if you have an affected adapter.
Recommended Action
Prior to updating to one of the levels above, if the affected adapters are used, care must be taken to apply an ifix for this issue prior to booting on the updated SP or else there may be no network connectivity available to the LPAR after booting.
For normal AIX updates and VIOS updateios, the ifix can be applied to the LPAR after the SP is applied, before rebooting.
For nim installs, the ifix can be applied to the update spot resource by following the steps HERE .
For alt_disk installs, the ifix can be applied to the upgraded alt_disk image by following step 3 HERE .
For viosupgrade, first upgrade to 4.1.0.10 using viosupgrade (making sure the fix for HIPER IJ50326 is in place first). After completing that upgrade, then apply 4.1.0.21 SP + ifix at the same time using updateios.

This table describes which active levels are affected and where to obtain fixes.
Before the APAR fix is available, an interim fix (iFix) is available for each affected level.
The available interim fixes might apply only to the latest Service Packs. If a custom interim fix is required, contact IBM Support.
The interim fixes can be downloaded from the same location by using HTTPS or FTPS.
