How To Find Feature Code For AIX, Linux, IBM i Adapters and going to Fix Central To Look Up Fixes

How To

Summary

The document presents the most efficient method how to determine I/O Adapters identification number (Feature Code (FC) for AIX and Linux, Customer Card Identification Number (CCIN) for IBM i to find respective fixes in the IBM Fix Central.

Environment

Methods how to determine Feature Codes or Customer Card ID Number's for specific machine Type, Model and Serial Number:
  • Use the IBM Entitlement Systems Support portal to determine system inventory in My Inventory, Inventory Explorer section. Please provide your "Customer Number", select from "Designated machine" list machine Type, Model and Serial Number and press magnifying glass icon. A full system inventory containing all the Feature Codes that have been selected during machine order or MES are available in the Summary Tab.  Data could be downloaded to the file in the three available formats: CSV, TXT, CFR.
  • Microcode Discovery Service  guide you thought simplifying I/O resources microcode administrative tasks by using the FLRT website. For more detailed information, refer to the movie showing step by step instruction.
  • Manual data collection out of the operation system and manual fixes check. For more details please refer to the Steps section.
Software pre-requirements to collect data out of the Operating system:

Steps

Select respective Tab for required Operating System
What data needs to be collected and how to find I\O Adapters Feature Code (FC) and Customer Card Identification Number (CCIN):

It would be sufficient to run just a few commands from command line interface.
In VIOS, commands need to be run on OEM environment. To obtain OEM environment run on an oem_setup_env command.

lscfg -v

On the "lscfg -v" command output extract there are VPD information examples for two I/O Adapters. Those information are different and its content depends on the I/O Adapter Vendor.
To check the I/O Adapter latest firmware level, search for I/O Adapter Feature Code (FC)/Marketing ID.

If I/O Adapter VPD contains only CCIN, like on the example for Fiber Channel card resource name: fcs2, CCIN has to be converted into FC using IBM Documentation pages.

Provide CCIN to convert it into FC like on the example and press magnifying glass icon:

In the numerous pages found, find the one that best describe your system type and model which have FC and CCIN in the title and short description underneath.

I/O Adapters VPD data can often contain also installed I/O Adapter firmware version, however it is advisable to compare characters chain we think it might be installed I/O Adapter firmware version with the other AIX/VIOS command output which is designated exactly for this purpose.

Command that displays I/O resources installed firmware:

lsmcode -A

How to check I/O Adapters installed firmware level:

Comparing "lscfg -v" and "lsmcode -A" output, I/O Adapter installed firmware version may or may not have an identical format.
In our example for Fibre Channel adapter CCIN 577F in "lsmcode -A" command output, if we remove all zeros and add dots, we receive the same result as in lscfg -v command output - 12.4.257.30.

How to check I/O Adapters current firmware level:

The most recent I/O Adapter firmware version can be found in the IBM Fix Central pages.
To be able to find I/O Adapter firmware for specific adapter please type its Feature Code (FC) in "Product Selector" filed.

General Hardware Resources Fix strategy for IBM i:

As like on all Licensed Programs as well as IBM i operating system itself, I/O hardware resources require fixes.  They need to be loaded and apply for Licensed Internal Code LICPGM(5770999). It can be done by applying the Cumulative PTF's packages, and Hardware and Related PTF's groups.

How to check fixes level already installed on your system:
Please refer to Displaying fixes information on your system IBM Documentation pages.

How to check most latest PTF's level:

Latest Cumulative PTF's packages and all Group PTF's can be checked and download on the IBM Fix Central pages.
On the "Product selector" field type "IBM i" and click "Continue" button.

What data needs to be collected and how to find I\O Adapters Feature Code (FC) and Customer Card Identification Number (CCIN):

If IBM Power Systems service and productivity tool is installed on the Linux you can run lscfg -v or lscfg -D commands to attempt to determine I/O Adapters FC and CCIN. Please keep in mind that VPD information is I/O Adapter Vendor specific and you may also need to use alternative method described in this document, for example using  IBM Entitlement Systems Support portal.

The example below presents lscfg -v command output for I/O Adapter IBM Vendor.

How to check I/O Adapters firmware level:

Due to the fact that information about installed firmware is vendor-specific. It is advisable to go directly to  IBM Fix Central  and uses I/O Adapter FC in the "Product selector" search filed to find additional instructions and most recent I/O Adapter firmware level.

To be able to find I/O Adapter firmware for specific adapter please type its Feature Code (FC) in "Product Selector" filed.
