IBM Support

Transceiver component (SFP) is replaceable for following POWER Fibre Channel and Ethernet adapter features

News

Abstract

IBM supports the replacement of transceivers (SFPs) on certain Fibre Channel and Ethernet adapter features.

Content

This article covers the IBM adapter which support replacing/swapping transceivers (SFP's).
The purchase and migration to these Adapters should help to ease troubleshooting and repair time for client, when facing issues in their Power System environments in that realm.
The following IBM POWER Fibre Channel adapter features do support the replacement of transceivers (SFPs).
A separate part number for the SFP / Transceivers does exist and can be ordered.

The following IBM POWER Network adapter features do support the replacement of transceivers (SFPs). They usually support multiple SFP's, to see the full list of what they support check the adapter IBM documentation.
Ethernet adapters that are sold for use with copper attachment cannot be converted for use with optical transceivers.

IBM can only replace Transceiver / SFP´s that the Client originally purchased from IBM.
that are in warranty or covered in a Hardware Maintenance contract.
compatible transceivers should be used in SAN or network side.
Having replaceable SFP's doesn't change any of troubleshooting steps we have. this means both client and IBM support should follow the procedures to find the issue. and don't start replacing/swapping SFP's only cause it's now easier and supported.
For further information review the specific adapter details description section in IBM Documentation.
