Question & Answer
Question
How do I install IBM Rational Developer for i without downloading the large .zip files?
Cause
The Rational Developer for i evaluation page at http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/downloads/r/rdi/ provides the option of downloading full product .zip files or performing a Web Install of the product.
Answer
Note: The following information applies to Rational Developer for i V9.6. The information does not apply to V9.8 which has a simplified install that does not use IBM Installation Manager. The Fix List has links for the download for V9.8 and the documentation site has installation instructions.
You can do a Web install of Rational Developer for i V9.6. Only the content for the features you select will download from IBM. The product will automatically install the latest fixpack level.
If you are installing on Windows, the Automated procedure is easiest. Otherwise, follow the Manual Procedure.
V9.6 Automated Procedure (Windows only):
Download and run IBM Installation Manager that is pre-configured for Rational Developer for i on Windows.
- Download RationalDeveloperForiV9.6TrialWebInstall-Windows.zip from Fix Central.
- Unzip the file to a local folder with no spaces in the name.
- Run UserInstall.bat to install for the current user. Run AdminInstall.bat if you are an administrator and want to install it for all users on the machine.
- Note: You will be prompted for a user ID and password. This is your IBMid. It is required to be able to install the product. If you do not have one, you can register for one (they are free) at developerWorks.
V9.6 Manual Procedure (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X):
The steps are to (1) install or update IBM Installation Manager (if it is not already installed or at correct level), (2) configure Installation Manager to use the RDi repository, and then (3) start the install.
- Install or update IBM Installation Manager (1.9.2.1 is minimum version).
- If you have IBM Installation Manager installed already, enable Installation Manager updates:
- Click File -> Preferences
- Go to the Updates preference page
- Ensure that Search for Installation Manager updates is checked.
- If you do not have Installation Manager or Installation Manager does not update automatically, you can download Installation Manager for free. Choose the one that corresponds to your platform.

- Note: If considering Big Sur or newer, see https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/6373030 for some additional information.
- Run UserInst executable to install for the current user. (Run the Install executable if you are an administrator and want to install it for all users on the machine.) Review the document Installation Manager for more details on how to download and install Installation Manager.
- If you have the 32-bit version of Installation Manager installed already (check Help>About for the Architecture) and it does not update automatically for some reason: IBM Installation Manager for Windows x86 or IBM Installation Manager for Linux x86.
