Error description

  • Problem Description:

When programmatically setting the javax.net.ssl.trustStore using
jks and javax.net.ssl.trustStorePassword properties, a call to
    SSLSocketFactory.createSocket(addr,port) has the following
    side-effect:

    java.lang.NullPointerException
    at
    com.ibm.websphere.ssl.protocol.SSLSocketFactory.createSocket(SSL
    SocketFactory.java:431)

    FFDC reports the following message

java.lang.IllegalArgumentException: Invalid trust file name of
    null
     at
    com.ibm.ws.ssl.provider.AbstractJSSEProvider.getKeyTrustManagers
    (AbstractJSSEProvider.java:367)

The above error will be fixed by adding additional system
    property of javax.net.ssl.trustStoreType=JKS

But the above NullPointerException error message misleading
    information and it causes confusion.

This APAR will give a clue to throw a more appropriate exception
    for problem determination

WebSphere Application Server was not properly checking for
null when invoking the createSocket() method.

Problem conclusion

  • WebSphere Application Server has been modified to correctly
check for null when invoking createSocket() and will produce a
    more descriptive exception, a javax.net.ssl.SSLException.

The fix for this APAR is currently targeted for inclusion in
fix pack 7.0.0.13. Please refer to the Recommended Updates
