ITCAM for Transactions DLA

Both Response Time and Transaction Tracking export static service objects into Tivoli Business Service Manager through the DLA. Both components display real-time events in Tivoli Business Service Manager that are taken from IBM Tivoli Monitoring situations through the EIF probe. This section looks at exporting static service objects into Tivoli Business Service Manager using DLAs.

Both Response Time and Transaction Tracking have a separate DLA which are used to extract data from ITCAM for Transactions.

To extract the data, Response Time uses the command line, while Transaction Tracking uses a Take Action command. The books created from these two sources are then loaded into Tivoli Business Service Manager.

Note: Running the Tivoli Business Service Manager DLA uses additional processor cycles. This can last several minutes, and should therefore be run at a time when additional processor consumption is least obtrusive.

The DLA books can be read by Tivoli Business Service Manager and the Tivoli Application Dependency Discovery Manager. The Discover Library Toolkit processes the DLA and creates service objects in the database.

When the Discovery Library Toolkit loads the DLA into Tivoli Business Service Manager, the Business Process objects are high-level services that can have multiple child Activity services. For example the DLA can create a service model hierarchy where Application1 and Application2 are Business Services that contain multiple Transactions (Activity services) as shown here:

Other CMDB objects are also created by the DLA including the TMSAgent object representing an IBM Tivoli Monitoring agent installation that monitors the Business Process and Activities as well as IP Address and Fully Qualified Domain Names (FQDN) that refer to the servers being monitored.

Note: The server data is not for all of the Response Time components.

Loading the DL book into Tivoli Business Service Manager

When a DL book is created, it can be loaded into Tivoli Business Service Manager. The Tivoli Business Service Manager Discovery Library Toolkit process is a background process that loads the XML books created by the DLA tool already described.

On Windows systems this service is called Tivoli BSM Discovery Library toolkit and needs to be started in Services.

On Linux and UNIX systems, you need to stop and restart the Discovery Library Toolkit process before you load data from the DL book, but only if it has not been restarted before running the tbsmconfig tool.
  • To stop the Discovery Library Toolkit, run the command:
    /etc/init.d/tbsmrdrtk2 stop
  • To start the Discovery Library Toolkit, run the command:
    /etc/init.d/tbsmrdrtk2 start

The books that the ITCAM for Transactions DLA tool creates should be copied to the directory monitored by the Tivoli Business Service Manager Discovery Library Toolkit. By default, the directory is %TBSM_HOME%\discovery\dlbooks. The Discovery Library toolkit processes the books and loads them into Tivoli Business Service Manager within minutes. For more information about the Tivoli Business Service Manager Discovery Library toolkit, see the Tivoli Business Service Manager Administration, Installation, Scenarios, and Customization guides in the Tivoli Business Service Manager Information Center.

Note: To display the Transaction Tracking DL book in Tivoli Business Service Manager V4.2.1, update your Tivoli Business Service Manager software to V4.2.1 Fix Pack 1 and reload the DL book.
