Introduction
Brazil requires manufacturers, importers, distributors and retailers that produce or sell batteries and accumulators, or that use such devices in their products, to create free-of-charge programs to collect and, in an environmentally responsible way, transport, recycle and dispose of such items. This is required by law known as Conama 401 (PDF, 153KB) of November 4th, 2008.
In order to comply with the law and support our clients in Brazil, IBM set out a battery return program for recycling and proper disposal of such product. Below you will find guidelines in how to proceed to send your batteries back to IBM for due recycling and disposal.

Battery Removal from IBM Products
Clients must check their operation manuals (user guides) in order to find information related to safe processes for removing and replacing batteries in IBM products. Some batteries, such as battery packs used in portable equipment, are designed to be easily removed and replaced by clients. Other batteries should only be removed and replaced by authorized service suppliers, as directed by IBM user guides.
IMPORTANT:
All direct handling of lead-acid (Pb) batteries and accumulators, including Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPSs) and Integrated Battery Features (IBFs), should only be performed by IBM authorized maintenance technicians.
