Inland Empire Health Plan Thrives and Excels in an Ever-Changing Payer Market

Just a few years ago, Inland Empire Health Plan (IEHP) faced an unexpected surge in membership. The communities in Southern California it served were hit hard by the recession and had one of the highest unemployment rates in the nation. As people lost insurance coverage along with their jobs, IEHP experienced substantial growth in its two lines of business: Medi-Cal and Cal-Medi Connect. This resulted in difficulties meeting service standards for members and providers. To improve efficiency and service, IEHP worked closely with Simpler Consulting, part of IBM Watson Health, to implement lean business management practices to support employees, increase efficiency, and improve services to providers and members. Benefits include $41 million in annual savings across the organization, a 90% decrease in provider onboarding time, and more.

Pharmacists need a quick way to research drug dosages. The pharmacist accesses a drug database, enters the specific drug, and then toggles through options to identify dosage guidelines based on patient age, weight and other factors to provide evidence-based recommendations. The pharmacy team at Peninsula Regional were part of a limited availability rollout of Micromedex with Watson, a solution that incorporates artificial intelligence (AI) into their drug information database. This new layer of AI-powered search technology allowed Peninsula to bypass the old keyword-based research process in favor of a new search box that accepts natural language queries. Kaiser Permanente's Applications: Journey to Cloud

Working with IBM, Kaiser Permanente developed a cloud rehost framework, integrating multiple KP organizations and BIOs including vendors. The operational adoption of cloud rehost framework was a step-by-step approach where only upfront application stakeholder agreement was high-touch human work while the following workflow activities were low-touch, highly automated processes such as but limited to data collection, segmentation, app grouping by BIOs, affinity, cloud suitability, design blueprint, and playbook. This helped us significantly reducing timeline and managing volume. We'll share lessons learned to make our framework real including various test pattern learning from doctors, audiologists, and end-user device testing after cloud rehost.

Using IBM Micromedex with Watson to Improve Patient Care at Peninsula Regional Medical Center

Come hear first-hand about the performance and significant benefits of this approach.

Responding to the Long Term Care Dilemma Facing the Insurance Market

Many of the leading life insurers who sold Long Term Care policies are coming to terms with their policyholders aging and on the brink to claim benefits. This has impacted reserve requirements, market value, and consumed senior leadership attention. As an industry, there was very little focus and investment to understand and minimize the impact of the impending LTC claims and resulting liabilities. Without a change, the financial risk from these LTC claims will continue to plague the industry and negatively impact bottom-line results. Technology is now available to help solve the problem and we are working on ways to understand the risk and develop programs to improve and change the outcomes working together with our policyholders.
