Back up and restore DNS data
You can automatically back up your DNS settings across multiple cloud providers, so that if unexpected events occur, you can restore services quickly to minimize downtime and protect your data.
IBM® Cloud Sync backs up DNS data continuously in near real time to an Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) object storage.
Back up and restore process
Whether IBM NS1 Connect® is your primary or secondary DNS provider, you can back up DNS data to make sure that it is protected.
Cloud Sync backs up DNS data through an external network to an S3 object storage. Follow this process to start backing up DNS data:
- Connect the external network to the S3 object storage. This is a one-time setup for each network that you want to use.
- Publish the zones to the network.
After the zone is published, Cloud Sync backs up data automatically to the S3 object storage. Cloud Sync also logs an activity for each change that was made to the zone and its records.
If you need to restore the DNS data, you locate the activity in the zone and click restore.
The time that it takes to restore the DNS data depends on the size of the object, network conditions, and the region that you are restoring data from.
Types of data that Cloud Sync backs up and restores
If zones are connected to a backup network, Cloud Sync backs up zone and Filter Chain configurations. All items can be restored except secondary zones and their records.
| Data | Backup | Restore |

Primary zones and all records in the zone Note: Cloud Sync does not support versioned zones.

Requirements
To back up and restore data, you need the following:
- A Cloud Sync subscription
- An S3 object storage. You can have multiple storage buckets.
