Removing and replacing the 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, or 8205-E6D Slimline media device with the Virtual I/O Server or logical partition power on

Use this procedure to remove and replace a Slimline media device for replacing a failed device or as a part of another service action.

Attention: If you are removing a media device to install a new or upgraded media device, see Installing the 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, or 8205-E6D Slimline media device with the Virtual I/O Server or logical partition power on. If you are removing a media device as part of a service procedure, use the following procedure.

The power-on procedure is a complex set of steps that must be performed exactly to avoid potential data loss or system damage. You might also consider the power-off procedure, which is a simpler task that involves less risk of data loss or system damage. For instructions, see Removing a Slimline media device in the 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, or 8205-E6D.

To remove and replace a media device for the 8202-E4B, 8202-E4C, 8202-E4D, 8205-E6B, 8205-E6C, or 8205-E6D with the Virtual I/O Server or logical partition powered on, complete the following steps from the system or partition that controls the media device:

  1. From the Virtual I/O Server command-line interface, log in as a padmin user or as a service representative user.
  2. If you are a service representative user, skip to step 4 because you can already view the diagmenu display.
  3. If you have logged in as a padmin user, type diagmenu.
  4. Press Enter.
  5. On the Function Selection display, select Task Selection.
  6. On the Tasks Selection display, select Hot Plug Task.
  7. Select SCSI and SCSI RAID Hot Plug Manager.
  8. Select Attach a Device to a SCSI Hot Swap Enclosure Device. The system displays a list of empty slots in the Small Computer Systems Interface (SCSI) hot-swap enclosure device.
  9. Select the slot from which you want to remove the media device.
  10. Complete the prerequisite tasks. For instructions, see Before you begin.
  11. If you are removing the media device as part of another procedure, continue to the next step. If you are removing the media device because of a system failure, see Identifying a part.
Attention: Follow these instructions exactly to avoid data loss or system damage.
  12. Remove the front cover:
  13. For a rack-mounted system, place the system into the service position. For instructions, see Placing a rack-mounted model into the service position.
  14. Complete the following steps to remove the Slimline media device as shown in the following figure:
    1. Pull the retaining tab (A) to the right and outward.
Note: If you want to install a new Slimline media device, ensure that you retain the latch (A) for use with the new media device.
    2. Grasp the DVD drive (or filler) and slide it out of the enclosure.

Attention: Media devices are fragile. Handle with care.
  15. Find the package that contains the new media device and remove it from the static-protective package.
    Attention:
    • Attach a wrist strap to an unpainted metal surface of your hardware to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD) from damaging your hardware.
    • When using a wrist strap, follow all electrical safety procedures. A wrist strap is for static control. It does not increase or decrease your risk of receiving electric shock when using or working on electrical equipment.
    • If you do not have a wrist strap, just prior to removing the product from ESD packaging and installing or replacing hardware, touch an unpainted metal surface of the system for a minimum of 5 seconds.
  16. Align the replacement media device with the Slimline media bay and support the bottom of the device as you slide it halfway into the system unit. Do not push the device in any farther, because you might install the device out of sequence.
  17. While holding the retaining tab (A), push the device (B) fully into the system as shown in the following figure.
