The Installation Process for Non-clustered Systems

The following sections contain the prerequisite information and preliminary tasks that you need to complete before installing Sterling Gentran:Server® in your non-clustered system (single workstation, single controller system, or multiple controller system). You should review these topics and complete any pre-installation tasks before using the setup program to install Sterling Gentran:Server.

The following table describes the tasks you need to complete to install Sterling Gentran:Server in your system. This is a high-level overview.

1 Create and verify users. Add any users and verify existing Microsoft Windows logons for Sterling Gentran:Server users.
2 Create the Microsoft Windows global group and add users. Create a global group that contains all Sterling Gentran:Server users by adding the Microsoft Windows logons for Sterling Gentran:Server users to the group.
3 Create the Microsoft Windows local group and grant access to the global group. Create a local group named GENTRANUSERS that contains the global group you created.
4 Change the local security setting. You may need to change the local security setting to ensure that services restart after installation. To do this, add Microsoft Windows user rights to the local group. Assign to the local group the user rights that Sterling Gentran:Server requires:
  • Load and unload device drivers
  • Log on as a batch job
  • Log on as a service
  • Log on locally
  • Take ownership of files or other objects

6 Create and share a folder for system data store. Create the system data store folder and share it for the group of users you created.
7 Install and configure your database. Refer to About Database Setup for setting up either the SQL or Oracle database management system.
8 Install or upgrade Sterling Gentran:Server. Use the setup program to install or upgrade Sterling Gentran:Server in your system. See one of the following:
9 Install or upgrade options and extensions. Install or upgrade any Sterling Gentran:Server options you purchased. See the following topics:

  2. Installing RosettaNet
  3. Installing the Extension for SAP
10 Install IBM® Sterling Gentran® Standards Database for EDI. If you selected Integration Components, use the setup program to install the Sterling Gentran:Server Standards Database for EDI. See the instructions provided with that DVD.
11 Start the Sterling Gentran:Server system. Start the Executive Service on the primary system controller before using Sterling Gentran:Server. See Starting the System.
12 Implement security. Specify the Sterling Gentran:Server security mode and add users to the system. See About Security.
13 Implement communications. Set up the modem and pools in your system. See Communications.
14 Install software patches. Install any service packs or patches.
15 Validate Installation. Complete the post-installation tasks to validate your installation. See Installation Validation Process.
