its worth reading the oevre of one of america's finest young novelists, Jonathan Lethem, just so you can fully appreciate his latest work, which talks to the influences that made him a writer- http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0385512171/002-7120383-1935210?v=glanceHe is a bright spike, and brilliant with language. playing with genre fiction he is now moving ahead into "great american novel" territory - in Fortress of Solitude. but Motherless Brooklyn is just amazing. Then there is Lack, and Girl In Landscape.

If you enjoy Sorkin's writing, be sure and check out Sports Night on DVD, the short-lived TV "dramedy" he did before West Wing. One of the best shows on TV, ever.
