Giving the fact that IBM SwKBT will be out of support in April 2017, many of you have asked us what are the next steps; so we have created this technote to address your questions.
If you have any comments related to this technote, please add them below.
SwKBT end of support and relate actions for customers
This document provides end of support plans for Software Knowledge Base Toolkit (SwKBT), it's consequences and actions for customers depending products used and business needs.
Software Knowledge Base Toolkit (SwKBT) is a component used to manage software catalog by several IBM products. These are:
Tivoli Assed Discovery for Distributed (TAD4D)
IBM Endpoint Manager for Software Use Analysis (SUA)
IBM BigFix Inventory (BFI)
IBM Control Deck (ICD)
IBM Smart Cloud Control Desk (SCCD)
SwKBT component will no longer be supported after April 2017 .
For BigFix users this was announced in this official communication: http://bigmail.bigfix.com/pipermail/besadmin-announcements/2016-June/003400.html
For other users this current document is the official information about end of support for SwKBT. The end of support (EOS) date is aligned with TAD4D and SUA 2.x products' EOS dates, so although TAD4D and SUA users may continue to use SwKBT until product EOS, we strongly encourage them to migrate to BFI 9 product as soon as possible and use built-in catalog management capabilities there.
BFI customer using SwKBT:
For BFI SwKBT is an optional component which was part of early product versions only. Since March 2016 (BFI 9.5 product corresponding to application version 9.2.3) SwKBT is no longer part of the product, can not be downloaded neither from passport Advantage not from fixlet site for new BFI customers
Customers with SwKBT in place but not creating new software catalog content may immediately stop using SwKBT by simply importing IBM-provided catalogs directly to BFI
Customers with SwKBT in place and creating custom catalog content may use the provided tool to migrate already created custom content from SwKBT to BFI and continue to create new content directly in BFI. This procedure is described under this link: http://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSKLLW_9.5.0/com.ibm.bigfix.inventory.doc/Inventory/upgrading/t_migrating_swkbt.html
Considerations for customers using BFI integration with ICD or SCCD:
IBM-provided catalog can be directly imported to both BFI and ICD if no catalog customizations are done
For environments with customized catalog, the custom product definitions which were discovered by BFI in the environment will be on the fly created in ICD by the ITIC adapter
To use custom product definitions in ICD before the discovery in environment, one may manually create similar product definitions in both BFI and ICD
Currently there is no possibility to automatically move all catalog customizations from BFI to ICD by ITIC. However, we are actively working on introducing such capability in the near future. This document will be updated once such capability exists.
SUA customers using SwKBT
For SUA SwKBT is also an optional component. Customers having it in place but not creating any custom catalog content can simply import IBM-provided catalog directly to SUA.
All SUA customers are advised to upgrade to the latest BFI 9 product and use catalog management capabilities there.
TAD4D customers using SwKBT
For TAD4D users SwKBT is a mandatory component which needs to be used even if no catalog customizations are done.
TAD4D users are advised to promptly migrate to BFI 9 product and use catalog management capabilities there.
